Dog needs surgery, bad memories

My almost ten year old beagle Yadi is scheduled June 6th for a “possibly cancerous” lump on his leg, as well as a benign lump on a different leg starting to interfere with movement (we’ve been watching that one for a few years with vet guidance)

For one in the six years we’ve had him, he’s been incredibly healthy and this is the first time he’s been under the knife and it makes me nervous with his age and slightly overweight, even though his heart lungs and blood panel is all perfect.
It’s also hard hearing the “C word” as I lost my rottie/lab mix Panda 2 years ago to a burst spleen caused by hemangiosarcoma at only barely 8 years old.

So everyone how do I not freak out for the next month while waiting?!

Try not to focus on it!

We had a greyhound with a soft tissue sarcoma on a front leg. Talk about a difficult surgery! Not a lot of room to maneuver! Thankfully we are super close to Tufts and one of their board certified surgeons did a fantastic job on it. She had a month of radiation afterwards. We used to joke that she loved going to the doctor so she could get some really good naps.

We had her for a number of years more before we lost her to something else.

No good answers, just make an extra fuss over him. Fingers crossed for you two!

I have a 12 year old dog with a soft tissue sarcoma on her front leg. Had it removed last October and it grew back. She is having it removed this week again and have a consult with a radiation oncologist at the end of June.
How did your dog do with the radiation? Pretty well tolerated? Did you make any diet changes? Any advice for us? She is the bestest dog ever, and I am trying to learn all that I can.

She did GREAT with the radiation. IIRC she had it five days a week for 3 or 4 weeks. I dropped her off at the oncologist in the morning and they would treat her. I had to pick her up after work so they kept her all day. I was more worried about that much sedation than the radiation actually but she didn’t have any issues with it.

No diet changes or any other changes really. Took it easy for a while in terms of exercise but that was it.

It was brain cancer that got her in the end. :disappointed: But it was a number of years later. Miss that girl more than anything. She was and always will be my number one girl.
