Dog poop septic system

I have a home made septic system in my back yard. Someone told me about theirs, and I thought that was a splendid idea as opposed to picking poop and carrying the bag to the trash can. I normally pick the yard every day. I have a regular sized plastic trash can with the bottom removed and rocks at the bottom for drainage.

I use a produce called Doggy Dooley. It’s a natural enzyme (or something) that dissolves the poop. It’s not keeping up with the volume though. I add it once a week, more then the recommended tablespoon. I cover the top of the contents of the bin with the powder once a week and on the days I don’t add the powder, I add water. It’s getting fuller than I think it should.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Doogie Dooley system did not work for us • two wire-hair fox terriers proved to be too much for the :poop: system !

System had to be taken out • quite a huge messy chore as I remember •

  • this was decades ago / maybe better now ?’

  • we had placed it in the huge vacant lot behind the house / thank god !

Huh, 2 sewage system posts in 1 day.
My suspicion is, just like real septic systems, the effectiveness depends entirely on the type and structure of your native soil. That is, I suspect the original design was based and built upon sandy, well-aerated soils, and the finer and tighter the soil, the larger the system needs to be or the less well the system will work.

Well…It’s not that magical - a sprinkle of enzymes isn’t going to make piles of poop just dissolve. It will compost and reduce, but it will still be there to some extent.

It might be that you just need a bigger system for the amount of waste you’re trying to reduce - maybe you need two setups, so that once one is 60-70% full you stop adding until it composts down somewhat. I’m not sure I would add water; is that recommended?

What are you supposed to do with the ‘dogpoop’ manure pile once the can is full? I wouldn’t spread it on my vegetable garden, or on the flowers.

These are good;

We had a doggy dooley system at our house when we first built, but it really didn’t keep up (2 medium dogs, chow and corgi) and we stopped using it. Forgot about it. Then my partner “found” it 20+ years later when he stepped in it. :grimacing: It is removed and filled in now. Few things gross my partner out, but even he couldn’t bear to wear those shoes again.
