Dog rescues around Boston? (NH/CT/southern NY/RI, etc)

My sister is looking high and low for a dog to add to her life. She’s found working with the local rescues REALLY irritating and just had another flunk out experience yesterday. Figured I’d see if the COTH wisdom pool can help her.

My sister is looking for a young ADULT (she does NOT want a puppy or anything that thinks it is still a puppy) dog with basic good manners, good with cats and is okay with being left in the house 8 hours a day while she is at work. So she wants to try to get a dog that is already IN a similiar situation (eg, a foster)

Grooming requirements A-OK. She’s open to a dogs with blemishes (missing eye, scars, missing legs), and she’d consider deaf or blind BUT as a novice dog owner isn’t sure she has the skills to handle a deaf/blind. Does not want anything smaller than a Corgi. Can have any breed or size, including Pit/PitMix

She’s a runner and wants a jogging partner, to go to hashes with her, etc. She also wants dog to go places and do things with her and her dog-owning friends, so dog needs to be cool with dogs, people, places, car rides, etc. She travels a lot and dog probably will go on all kinds of hiking/biking/outdoor sort of trips.

She has a house with a yard just outside Boston (true story!) and 1 declawed cat. She has excellent references, comes from a animal family, and a solid career and is basically just one of those epic people who any dog would be lucky to find.

She could do a general search with Google/Bing, etc. of “Dog/Animal Rescues in whatever area” and come up with many of the more grassroots rescues that aren’t as difficult as some of the breed rescues. She could also check at the Pet Smart or other local pet stores for adoption days – many of the rescues bring in pets for adoption that are in foster situations. Check the local shelter – some of them use fosters as well or know some. Sometimes the local vets could recommend a client who fosters. Search in Facebook also for dog rescues in your area. Good luck and kudos to her — wish she were closer – I works with a number of rescues here in Alabama and could sure help her – we are always desperate to find the right home for a wonderful dog!
GOod luck!

She’s done all these routes and it sounds like she’s striking out with a quality rescue in any of the states I mentioned. She goes through the application process, gets approved, just to get told the dog she had originally applied for is no longer up for adoption, she has to put in applications just to ask simply questions("is she good with cats?). She had a dog do a home visit yesterday and had a really bad experience with the foster parent (She didn’t like the dog and the foster told her it wasn’t supposed to be love at first sight)

She doesn’t want to do a shelter dog because she really wants the assurance the dog can live the lifestyle she’s offering. A dog that isn’t okay with being alone during the day is just not going to work for her.

Am hoping the COTH wisdom might have a good lead she can pursue that she hasn’t already found.

I live in Texas, it’s possible that she’ll also include Texas in her search since she can come down to my place for viewing/visit.

Does she want a dog who can be crated while she’s gone or one who is loose? If she can deal with crated, she may need to look at homes who have been in foster situations.

Has she looked at greyhound rescues? Our greyhound was a great guy. They aren’t necessarily built for doing too much in the summer heat but could be workable. Many are cat tested but she would have to double check that of course. Ours loved his kennel/crate and slept in it when we were gone and at night.

I specifically fostered Pits so I am mostly helpful with that breed.

I fostered multiple dogs for this rescue and have 2 foster failures and would highly recommend them. Lots of family friendly Pits and Pit mixes. They also do Rotties and bring lots of dogs up from FL and GA including some smaller mutts for other local rescues. They have many dogs in foster homes waiting for a forever family.

Also Braveheart Rescue and PittieLove Rescue are both excellent eastern MA based Pit rescues that I have personally worked with at a time or have friends who adopted from them.

There’s a thread with the exact same question about 8 posts down.

GSP rescue of New England might have somebody suitable.
