Dog sprayed by Skunk ETA spelling

I did a search and the most recent posts are a few years old. Surely products have gotten better.

Title says it all. (and I had it as spayed at first… … that is one smart and nimble skunk!)

My dog was sprayed last night. Her head is what mainly stinks. Her body has no smell at all.

She has already had two baths. One right after it happened with a Dawn soap and hydro peroxide mix. (I was out of baking soda).

She had a second one a bit ago, 1 qt of hydro perox with a squeeze of Dawn and 1/4 cup baking soda.

Any other tips for me?

What can I do around the house to make it smell better, and when I say around the house… I mean inside :sob: I have bowls of vinegar in every room.

I have Nature’s Miracle Skunk order remover coming and I read the reviews for using it on hardwood floors with having success.

What has worked for you?

I’ve used Skunk Off and Remington Skunk Odor Shampoo, and both work pretty well. They don’t totally remove the odor, but it’s much more bearable. Or maybe my nose just got used to it.

As for the house . . . the only thing I’ve found that works is tincture of time. That will work for your dog too.

I laughed when I read the title of your post. Some typos are priceless!

Thank you!

I am working and went too quick to post since the offending dog is sitting on my feet.

You should have left the title alone! Now people won’t know why the cartoon is so funny.

For those of you who are just now reading this thread, the original title said “Dog Spayed By Skunk.”

I had 3 PMs about my spray/spay title.

If the dog has long hair, shave it off. Most of the smell will go with the hair. Then make a paste of the peroxide and baking soda, apply it to dry hair and let set for 10 minutes. Then wash out with the dawn.

I was just thinking about doing a paste. I am going to do that after work. I also found a product called Pooph. I am thinking of getting that, but the reviews on Amazon are not super awesome about their result.

The NM skunk remover shampoo arrives tomorrow.

She is ridgeback, so short hair, single coated dog.

My tried and true remedy for the dog is thoroughly soak him in tomato juice. Massaged in all the way to the skin. This is best done naked. Rinse well. Lather well with straight dawn. Again worked all the way down to the skin but avoiding eyes. Rinse well. Towel vigorously. I have luckily not had it too bad inside the house. The smell will fade. In a week or two. All my sympathy!

My little dog never did learn about skunks. He got many haircuts when he would come home dripping with skunk spray :face_vomiting:

Good luck!

Pooph. It’s supposed to obliterate all animal odors. I think you can get it online or at PetSmart.

I have some sitting in my cart, but they do not list the ingredients, which I get, … they are protecting their IP; but people have allergies to all sorts of things. Even natural plant based solutions.

I think Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, and online retailers like Amazon and Chewy carry it too.

I read that a non-gel toothbaste does a good job with skunk odor removal.

That would actually be preferable. The dog would be fixed at low cost, and spaying doesn’t smell.

You have my sympathy! I am so smell-sensitive!

I know some professional groomers have special skunk treatments.
