Dog teeth chattering-- He's gone

There is actually an Eric. He’s a corgi/westie mix. I got him free on FB. His owner died and the owner’s son dumped him and lied about his age. I was told he was 10 but he’s got to be at least 15.

Long story short: Eric got tangled around the neck in a blanket one day several months ago while I was at work. He probably spent the day struggling to breathe because when I got home, his eyes were bleeding and he had emptied his bladder and bowels and it had dried.
I ran screaming in to the street and a neighbor got the blanket untwisted from his neck. As soon as he could breathe he could stand and he appeared to recover.

Since then, he as developed a teeth chattering tremor. It’s become more and more frequent. It was just every once in a while but now it’s every day and can last for an hour or more.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this with a dog? I have a vet appt. with him on Wed but I’m just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I could be pain also as he has a bad tooth…

I was 100% sure I was going to leave the vet office alone today. The chattering was almost constant and Eric was very unstable on his feet. The vet said she thinks most of it is pain related and the chattering is probably muscle damage from the strangling incident.

I wrote this poem. It’s called
I Thought I Was Going to Have to Kill My F*****g Dog Today

I’ve made that drive
So many times
To say goodbye
To my good friend

Who’s life’s no good
And is gonna get hurt
If I don’t decide
That it’s time to end

I load my friend up
I drive through my sorrow
I hope what I’m doing
Is just the right thing

I bring them in
The sympathetic technician
Hurries us in
So no one can see

The sadness that’s happening
For my friend that’s leaving
At the end of a needle
It’s for their own good

My dear little Eric
He’s gonna stay with us
I was so sad
For what I thought would be

Holding his head
In my lap as the needle
Slipped him away
To the end of his pain

I thought that was happening
I thought I would lose him
But the doctor said
It’s not time just yet

I’m so damn glad
That I still get to know him
And spend some time
Looking after my friend

I’m grateful to know
Today ain’t the day
For my Dear Litt’s Eric’s
Friendship to end.

The original incident must have been so scary for you and Eric. I’m glad the vet thinks that they can help him be more comfortable. I’m jingling for a speedy recovery for Eric!

How terrible! I’m glad the vet thinks there is something they can do for him. I hope he feels better soon.

How terrifying! My mom’s elderly, blind dog once got himself stuck under the dishwasher door when no one was home. It had a loose hinge so he must have bumped it wandering around. It was right next to the register so poor Fergus was a bit overheated by the time Mom found him, but he was fine.

It’s impossible to imagine every single situation they might get themselves into, so I hope you aren’t being hard on yourself. Here’s hoping the little guy recovers quickly.

He was responding so well to treatment but the muscle relaxers were giving him problems with his legs. He got that sorted out and was really back to himself for two days. Happy, walking, chasing the other dogs and then he just couldn’t walk. I tried to get him balanced but there was just no way.

I took him to an emergency vet and had him put down when I got home from work today.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sucks when you have to make that decision, but it sounds like he wasn’t going to have a very happy existence at this point, so you did the right thing for him.

I’m so sorry for the loss of Eric.

Sorry for your loss

So sorry. Hugs and jingles to you.

FWIW - I haven’t seen teeth chattering in a dog, but I did in a mare that was colicky. It was an intense pain reaction, so I imagine your vet was right about that.

I’m sorry about Eric. He sounds like a good friend that enjoyed a good life with you.

Heartbreaking…I am so sorry.

Oh I’m so sorry.

FWIW, I think the fact that he was 15 was probably the controlling factor more than anything you did or didn’t do. I’m sure he appreciated getting another chance at a human to love with you, and perhaps the arc of his life found you toward the end because you were the one who would give him a good one.

Sending love.
