Dog with blood in stool ( Dx Gastrointestinal Pythiosis)(Update Post 108)

Just to update, my dog( 2 yrs ) had surgery this AM. The vet found that there is an area (4-6 inch) of the large intestine/bowel that is very abnormal and thickened. A biopsy was taken and results should be back in ~ one week

Vet said it did not look like typical Irritable Bowel, and was not sure if removing the area was possible.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a hereditary problem of Australian Shepherds. I think there is gene testing for this in the breed. Hope your dog recovers well.

Hope you and your pup feel better soon.

Thanks Y’all, I’m so bummed… He’s running a fever and has to stay in the hospital another night. :frowning:

I think he needs some COTH healing jingles.

Jingles for everyone involved.

Sending jingles - hope his fever comes under control and you get him back home.

Jingles. My guy had 30 cm of bowel removed the first time and a bit more when they had to redo the anastamosis from a window to a point to point the year after. They suspected IBS after the fact and we did lots of tests but it turned out that the thickening was just from irritation from the crap he’d eaten (a vertebra that scratched down his intestine over the course of months).

Jingles for your pup!

Jingles for your guy

Thanks so much for all the jingles and good wishes!

Just catching this! Any update? Hoping for good news for your boy!

He came home Wed. afternoon. He is doing OK. He still has a low grade fever (102.6*) but he is eating his prescription diet, and drinking water. Poop is gross but bleeding seems to have stopped. Fingers crossed that his biopsy comes back as something we can manage.

Thanks to all for the kind words and jingles.

Jingles & AO continue ~

Thank you Zu Zu, I think all the positive energy is really helping. The vet gave us some Tramadol today so hopefully he’ll / we’ll get some sleep tonight.

Still jingling!!

Thank you MoonWitch,

I think all the jingles have worked! The biopsy report came back benign. He will probably need to take more Prednisone, and antibiotics, but that’s all very doable.
He is getting his strength back now that he is sleeping thru the night.

And thank you Zu Zu for your very kind PM!!!

Good news update ~ ((hug)) that dear boy !

Hi Zu Zu, you must be psychic, he is in the ICU @ the E-vet. he was running 105* fever, and abdomen distended with gas.

They are doing every thing they can to get the temp down, x-ray shows no torsion or bloat. They will give him Barium as soon as he has stabilized.

Thanks for thinking of us.

Poor thing! He’s really having a hard time! I hope he makes a turn around soon and gets better! Bless you for hanging in there with him.
