This is the news I have been dreading. The vet called this afternoon and said that my dog"s test for the gastrointestinal form of Pythiosis insidioum is positive.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20800978

www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/infectious-parasitic/c_multi_pythiosis?page=2

While a positive serum is not proof of the disease, this bout of tummy upset has been very different than any other. I had a sick feeling that this was going to be the case. The lab is re-examining the tissue sample they biopsied for signs of Pythiosis.

The best treatment is surgical removal of all affected tissue. That means opening him up again, and taking out a portion of his bowel. This could leave him with chronic diarrhea the rest of his life due to Short Bowel Syndrome.

Don’t know what we will do.

:frowning: I’m so sorry to hear this!

I’m very sorry to hear the diagnosis. I know you will make the best decision for him.

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear this.

What an awful decision to make, I am so sorry. Jingles for whatever you decide.

I’m so sorry for the bad news…

Wishing you strength, wisdom and peace with whatever you decide to do.

I’m so sorry. May your vet guide you towards the best decision for your little one. How very difficult.

I’m confident that you will do what you think is right with the information you have. You and your veterinarian have some tough decisions ahead and I’m jingling for you.

As for the short bowel syndrome, we thought that was what we were dealing with for a few months after my guy’s last surgery. However, with some probiotics, endosorb, pumpkin, etc, we got stools firmed up and once the inflammation decreased, he was okay again. It took a few months though. I’m not going to lie, it was very challenging for me. There were times when I was cleaning up yet another mess of loose stool in the house and I just broke down in tears. But we made it through. My guy was down about 50 cm of small intestine by the time all was said and done and he managed to recover pretty well and carried on for several years.

Jingling for you and thinking about you and your pup.

Thoughts and prayers and tears and ((hugs)) and Jingles laced with strength & AO

Jingling for you this morning.

Thank you all for the support and kind thoughts!!!

We have an appointment with an internal medicine/surgery specialist, for an opinion on whether the affected part of the bowel can be removed, and at the vet school with the only vet experienced with Pythiosis in our area.

Fingers cross we will have something to be Thankful for on Thursday.

Definitely hoping for good news! Hang in there!

My Bouv lived for 5 years with short Bowel Syndrome. He was misdiagnosed initially and his bowel was blocked for one week. A large section of bowel was removed. He was hospitalized for over a week. Total bill was $11,000. Luckily I had the funds.

He was on special food from the vet, GI moderate, for the rest of his life. Did have the occasional bout of diarrhea which I was able to correct with pumpkin and rice. He lived to be 13 which is old for a Bouv. Other than the diarrhea his quality of life was good.

Good luck with your boy. I never knew from one day to the next whether mine would make it.

Sending this link for a gofundme…not for you to contribute, but for the valuable information included as to the treatment(s) of this owner’s dog. If you read down past the copies of his bills, you will see his evaluation. Thought maybe something in there might help you. Best wishes.
