Our new dog literally overnight developed dandruff! We are also experiencing very dry, warm weather and I am wondering if that is all it is. She doesn’t seem itchy at all. She is a short coated dog, and nothing has changed in the four weeks we have had her.
Any ideas? And if it doesn’t clear up in a few days when the weather returns to normal is there a good shampoo or other treatment?
If she is older than 6 or so, you might get her thyroid checked.
No, she isn’t even a year old - best guess is around 10 months.
For our dog with skin issues (including dry skin when the seasons change) we use the Eqyss Microtek Shampoo (not the medicated one, not the dog one.) It is more than likely due to the season change. What does she eat?
Look at her food. When I got our elderly lab from the shelter, her coat was awful - dead, flat and dull as well as extremely greasy and dandruffy. Her former owner must have been feeding her garbage, and little of it (she was close to 10 lbs underweight as well.) Within three/four weeks of decent food, her coat turned shiny as a seal and the dandruff went away with regular brushing. I only gave her one bath the day after I got her out of jail, so the improvement had nothing to do with lots of baths, either.
She is eating Nature’s Domain salmon and sweet potato, which is what she was getting at the rescue before we got her. She did have some dandruff when they first got her, which had cleared up by the time we adopted her. But the rescue got her around the time of a pretty warm, dry Santa Ana spell as well, now that I think about it.
Her coat is nice and shiny and soft otherwise. She ended up getting a quick hose off yesterday, because she had too much fun playing at the dog park and came home covered in slobber and dirt. (she made new friends with a mastiff who tolerated her puppy play and used her a napkin!)
WorkingDrive - thanks for the recommendation - I have some Eqyss at the barn, will have to check if it is the medicated or not.
