Doggie's Costco Shopping List. Suggestions? I've never been.

A friend is taking me to Costco. What are smart doggie buys? I searched and found mainly food threads. That is good. Also fish oil and a joint supplement called Move Free.

Costco carries a grain-free fish protein kibble manufactured by & produced at same place as TOTW. My friend says she never sees the fish kibble there. I’ll cut out the TOTW label so I can compare, if it is there. Then I’ll have a hair-ripping crisis in the aisle about switching food.

I’m thinking fish oil, joint supplement, K9Advantix if they have it (anyone know?), grain free canned food for frozen kongs, and bones from the butcher. But I’ve never been to Costco. Do they have soup bones or such appropriate for recreational chewing? Do I have to buy 50 of em?

Any suggestions for a joint supplement (human or canine!)? I take fish oil and glucosamine myself.

Any other awesome deals for a solo person? Everyone gets TP there, right? I’ve read some cost-saving threads that warn Costco prices aren’t always better. I don’t know how to research that in advance so I know what is better bought at Walmart.

They have the best deal on bully sticks there. the large bully sticks. I think it is 10 for $24, but they are about a foot long. Also, jerky treats or all kinds, large boxes of dog treats, dog beds, dog food naturally. I haven’t seen K9 Advantix, but I have seen Frontline. They have all of the supplements you take for yourself that you mentioned. The Smartwater price is the best. 12 bottles for $10. 10lb bags of carrots for $7. I buy my coffee there because I hate running out of coffee. I also buy the protein shakes there…great for keeping at the barn and an emergency snack. Prepare to spend $100-$150! I can never get out of there for less than $100!

Bully Sticks!
Dog beds - huge for about $25 or so
Retriever Rolls rawhide
Fish oil capsules for the dogs - http://www.costco.com/Kirkland-Signature™-Omega-3-Fish-Oil-Concentrate-1000-mg%2C-400-Softgels.product.11072245.html
Fish oil capsules for me - http://www.costco.com/Kirkland-Signature™-Omega-3-Fish-Oil%2C-180-Softgels.product.11248464.html
Allergy meds of any type; generic Allegra, Zyrtec, Benedryl
Their Kirkland dog food is very high quality and a much better deal than premium dog food at Petco, Petsmart, etc. Depending on which variety, it costs between $25 and $30 for a 40 pound bag.
I’ve also gotten some good dog toys there; indestructible stuffed lion and giraffe, some big round plush covered bouncy balls that look like animals - also indestructible so far.

Check out the dog beds. Often our Sams Club has memory foam/serta filled dog beds for about 30-40 bucks. They aren’t always in stock, and sometimes the beds they have are just batting filled or foam that will compress too easily. But when they have the heavy serta beds with the zippered cover, we buy two of them. (we foster a ton of dogs so we’re always going to want a few clean beds down). We put lawn and garden trash bags over the bed inserts themselves to keep them protected from accidents.
We currently have 7 dogs sleeping on three beds. They love them, and each one of those beds would be easily twice the price in a pet store.

The Costco grain-free is very good. Our local Costco carries the salmon and sweet potato, at a significant savings over TOTW or similar available anywhere else. Our allergic dog is thriving on it! Dog beds are awesome, too.

I buy my dogs Kirtland fish oil there and the Kirtland brand Glucosamine/condroiton. They also love the big round beds with foam fiberfill in them. I also just today got the generic form of Rimadyl for about $13 instead of $45 from my vet. The grain free dog food is good as well.

Dog bed(s)! We bought a jumbo-size soft-&-squooshy one for $19.00 that the idiot brigade love even more than their uber-expensive Orvis one.

Needless to say, the fiberfill does flatten down some, but after 2 years it’s still squooshy enough to still be the favorite. Plus, the gang are smart enough to fold it/plump it up themselves to make it personally squooshy.

(And while I know you asked about dogs, we get our “Fresh Step” scoopable cat litter their as well - great price.)

Yes we love the Costco grain free dog food! Great price, and our dogs are doing great on it. We alternate the two different types regularly. The Costco brand flea and ticks meds didn’t do jack for the ticks in my neck of the woods. I love their dog beds and treats though! We got some awesome stuffed toys there this summer, 3 for $8, and they have lasted a long time.

If you buy their made in China dog treats, stay on top of the recalls - last year, my local Costco was v.e.r.y s.l.o.w to remove a recalled product :frowning:

Yes - we don’t buy dog food from Costco. Have been quite happy for DECADES with Nutro products. Ain’t broke; no need to fix.

Love their dog beds!
As far as I am aware, their Kirkland foods are still made by Diamond. I steer clear of all of those products since they have repeated quality control and recall problems.

Both my dog and my dad use this joint supp: http://t.costco.com/Kirkland-Signature™-GlucosamineChondroitin-Sulfate%2C-220-Tablets.product.11540398.html
I think it’s pretty much the same as the Move Free…

As a general rule, I don’t feed (or eat for that matter) products made in China, so I avoid some of the dog treats at Costco. I used to feed my dogs the dried duck jerky treats until I noticed they were made in China. Food safety just not stringent enough in China for my taste.

I do feed the grain free Kirkland feed to one of my dogs, he has been fine with it. The other gets very gassy so she still gets the expensive premium grain free food.

Mine also enjoy their dog beds and toys, very reasonably priced for the very decent quality.

My golden girl loves the alligator jerky from Costco. (US product) I had to get used to the unfamiliar smell but she goes bonkers for them. We have also gotten dog beds there over the years with Nebby’s favorite being the memory foam mattress and bolsters on two sides. Fish oil from Costco is a standard for her as is Cosequin DS with MSM.

For people I currently cannot get over having the Dole banana dippers.

Mine actually do better on the Kirkland grain free than they did on the boutique-brand equivalent.
They also stock dental chews, made in the USA, that my two both love. I can’t remember the name, but they’re big, white, and vaguely bone-shaped. $11.50 gets a bag of 24.

Update: I brought the TOTW label and compared it to Kirkland’s fish & potato food. Almost identical with some elements under Crude Analysis being 1% different. The Kirkland name is, I think, ‘something fish’ and TOTW name specifically states salmon. Same manufacturer & plant location. (Diamond, I know) Bought it. It was $35 for 35lbs vs $45 30lb TOTW.

Also purchased fish oil & glucosamine/chondroitin for me. This store didn’t have canned dog food or supplements.

We buy all our supplements there as well (the Fish Oil capsules are amazingly & thankfully “burpless”). In fact, some independent comparative study I read last year had Costco’s Kirkland brand of supplements in the top tier as far as quality, ingredients (lack of unnecessary fillers, etc.), cost, etc.

I recently switched from Natural Balance Salmon and sweet Potato to the Kirkland grain free salmon and sweet potato…My fussy girl likes it and has been doing great so far on it . The ingredients were almost identical and the NB was costing me almost $100 a month to feed her, the Kirkland is $35 a month…As long as she continues to do well on it, that’s what she’ll be getting!
I love the dental chews and agree the dog beds are amazing, her highness has 2 one upstairs and one down.

Costco is coming to big city just an hour and a half away. Can’t wait! Have even been toying with moving, and checked realtor.com for houses close to the proposed location.
