Dogs and carpet

I will soon be moving into a home with wall-to-wall carpeting in two bedrooms. Carpet is off-white. I’m normally not a fan of carpeting as I’ve always had dogs. But the carpet is new so we decided we’d keep it until it gets gross. I’ve bought a carpet stain remover and my dogs tend to sleep on dog beds rather than directly on the floor. Any other tips for keeping carpet clean when you have pets? Should I treat the carpet with scotch guard or something similar?

But area rugs for on top

I would put rugs over the carpet and start putting a fund together for carpet replacement eventually. You can have dogs and carpet but as the dog ages and has accidents eventually that carpet will be trash. Make sure your dog doesn’t have separation anxiety. My dog ripped a 1 ft hole in the carpet and I was only gone 30 minutes. Now I have no carpet and am happy.

I had a lovely carpet in this house. It was sea foam green. It was beautiful. I had two dogs and two cats. Things happen. Carpet cleaners are wonderful things. When it was cleaned, it was beautiful. The animals were all housebroken, but…pets… After a couple of months they would begin to look grim. But when cleaned, they were stunning.I kept it for about twenty years. I now have laminate floors, and they are SO much easier to keep clean. I cannot imagine having off white carpeting! Yikes!

I had light cream carpet and dogs, put down washable rugs where the high traffic areas will be. I had more issues with my kids than the dogs.

Have beige carpet in bedroom and living room. Supposedly made specifically for dogs. I’m not sure what I thought that meant, because it still gets dirty and isn’t all that easy to spot clean. So I just bought several area rugs at Goodwill. They’re mismatched but sort of the same color scheme. And I have the local carpet cleaner guy come about every 2 months.

No, I wouldn’t, I don’t think that stuff is good for dogs or humans. The original formulation of Scotch Guard had to be changed as the chemicals got into your bloodstream and persisted, if I recall correctly. I don’t know about the newer formula, and presumably, it’s not as bad, but personally, I’d still be leary of it.

I love, love, love my Ruggable rugs. Yes, the initial purchase price is a little something, but the toppers alone are quite reasonable, and you never have to replace the bottom layer.

I have two for my living room, so I have a clean one to put down while the other is in the wash.

Need to do the same for the one that’s in the front hall.

My other tip from the days of carpet, kids, dogs and cats?

Get one of these:

Spot cleaning when the mess is fresh is a huge help.

We have now gotten rid of all the carpeting in the house. It’s all hardword except for LVP in the kitchen. I have two Roombas, one for each floor. That and the Ruggables make keeping the house looking decent much, much easier.

is there any way to use it on a corderoy chair? The cat hair is strong on that one.

YES. It is a wonderful device.

I ordered it. It wouldn’t take my CC security code at first! I swear. I guess it was not mandated to pay off my credit cards! :unamused:
