Dogs, Fleas and My House

Just got back from a vet visit for my little dog and have been armed with flea medicines! Chihuahua got a pill to kill the living fleas on her, as well as Frontline. I just medicated her, my big dog, and my four cats (2 of which are outside) with the Frontline, so their actual bodies should be protected now.

I know the other equally important step in keeping fleas off is flea bombing/fogging the entire house. I have never done this before, but it seems quite daunting! If I’m correct, we should put away all food that the pesticides could get into and keep the people and pets out of the house for as long as the packaging says. But I have several more questions to the people that have done this before…

  1. Do I open up and leave open drawers (with clothes in them) when bombing?

  2. Is it a good idea to wash all bed linens before bombing and have them hanging outside on the line for when we do bomb the house so they don’t get chemicals on them and are clean?

  3. For a split level home, how many flea bombs should I buy to use? There are 4 floors total: small basement on one level; doggy/laundry room (most flea populated)/living room on one level; kitchen/dining/family room on one level; and the bathrooms and three bedrooms on the next level (one short hall with all bedrooms joining).

  4. After bombing the house, do I need to vacuum the carpets and mop? Will it have killed the fleas immediately?

  5. What brand do you recommend that I can purchase at Walmart or TSC?

Thank you guys so much!

I like the Zodiac flea bombs. Read the label as it will guide you as to how many you need. I do also recommend washing all bedding.

Zodiac is one of the best bombs. I had a bad case of fleas in the house several yrs ago. Yes, I washed the lined before I bombed--------start washer , bomb and run! Multi-task. Anyway, I did double the bombs as instructed. Yes open drawers, pull cushions off couch and prop them up, bomb the hell outta the place. It worked for me. Frontline Plus + Comfortis for the dogs. And you’ll need to worm everyone since fleas will give them tapeworms.
