Dog's foot - why is one toe suddenly longer than the others?

My 8 yo border collie has just come back from his evening stroll around the sheep a little lame. On checking the affected front foot, one of the middle toes has straightened, so that it sticks out about half an inch further than the toe next to it. Kind of like he is pointing at something. He is a little subdued, but is placing his weight on it. Of course it’s the start of the weekend so I don’t like to bother my vet when it’s not an emergency, which means waiting until Monday. I tried Google but can’t find any info. Anyone know what he’s done to himself, and should the foot be ok until Monday? Or is this something that should be seen to sooner? Thanks.

Tendon rupture?

Oh poop I wonder if this is what he has done. Been through a severed tendon with this dog twice before, except back leg, hock region (can’t remember the name of the tendon). All the bandage changes, keeping it dry, keeping him on a lead for months…uggh. He is looking quite subdued now, poor guy.

Does it look like this?

Dropped toe, from tearing /cutting of of the superficial digital flexor tendon. Repairs generally unsuccessful. Or it could be a broken toe.

Yes that is exactly what it looks like. He has not moved from his basket for the last two hours so he must be pretty sore. I will phone the vet first thing Monday. I was thinking of phoning tomorrow but hate to bother my vet on the weekend if not an emergency. As long as I keep him quiet, he should be ok until then. Would you phone on a Saturday if he were your dog?

I would take him to an ER vet. He needs pain meds if it’s broken. It’s not fair to let him wait in pain until Monday.

I would consider that an emergency call to the vet. It’s not a “bother” - that is a vet’s job. If they don’t do weekend emergencies, I’m sure they will refer you elsewhere, but Monday is still 2 days off. Long time to go with a broken bone or torn tendon and no pain meds or dx.

Took Jake in to the vet this morning. Went through the usual Jekyll & Hyde routine which he pulls at every appt:- being pleased to visit with and be petted by all the receptionists / patients in the waiting area, then turning into the Tasmanian devil when he goes into the room with the vet. Spinning around, growling which turns into high-pitch squealing, throwing himself on the floor. This is before the vet barely touches him. He’s a pickle, for sure.

Anyways, vet managed to inspect foot, doesn’t think it’s broken and doubted the tendon was torn. Thinks the pad is source of pain but no sign of infection or temperature. Gave Jake a pain killing injection and prescribed a course of Loxicom. Keep him on lead for next few days. I am still thinking it is the tendon because of the way toe sticks out a little but hope I’m wrong. Back on Monday if no improvement.
