dogs laying by the heat....is it safe?

Both my dogs have gotten in the habit of laying right by our hot air heat vent. Sometimes they will lay there for hours. The house is kept at like 70-72 degrees, so they shouldn’t be freezing. But they seem to love the heat blowing on them. Is this bad for them??

No. They will be fine

You’re lucky they lie by the register. One of my cats has decided that directly on one of mine is the optimum place to be. This in spite of the fact that I have special heated cat mats all over the place. But then, that’s cats for you.

It better be okay! My youngest dog, James, sits and stares at the fireplace in the morning until one of his humans fires it up. He then lays by the hearth for most of the morning. He’s a hot tamale after 30 minutes.

I think he must feel pretty powerful, though, knowing that his mere stare can inspire the fire gods to come alive.

that is a pretty talented dog ;)

thanks for the replies…this is only my second year owning dogs ever, so I just wanted to make sure there wasn’t some crazy medical condition that laying by the heat could induce lol …you never know with animals

I also have a cat that lies directly on the heat vent, spreading his boneless mass to cover every fraction of an inch. It’s also one of only a couple vents in the house that works at full strength. We pay approximately $100 a month to heat the cat.

My shorthaired dachshund spends the winter months wrapped in a blanket, but in the summer, will lie out on the deck in the sun and bake. It will be 90+ degrees and he will still find the sunniest, hottest spot. I let him rotate to bake both sides evenly and then I peel him up and drag him in, because I’m pretty sure otherwise he’d stay out there until he died.

What Are They Laying by the Heat?

My kitties liked to lie on the vents. I once had a roommate whose dog lay on the vent in the summer when the AC was on. Stank up the place.

Can’t think how lying on the vent could hurt them unless it dried out their skin and coats a little.

My fluffy dog has been hovering by the fire all day. He’s getting older and I think it feels good to him. He used to sit outside on cold days like today and be happy getting snowed on. I think he’s only been out a few times today and only for a few minutes at a time.

When I was a teenager, we had a little electric space heater in our basement den. The two dogs and cat would race each other to see who could get to it first and who could get closest to it. That thing kicked of SERIOUS heat…to the point the would be panting. But they loved it!

 I have the opposite problem, since my shaggy dog hates it warm and sleeps in my bedroom. My very cold bedroom.

My step-mother’s Yorkie sleeps under their wood stove. When her insides start to boil, she drags her little body about 5’ away and lays like a slug. After a short while, she’ll crawl back under the wood stove.

Though I wouldn’t say her activities justify a “nothing to worry about!” sort of response…she’s the weirdest dog I’ve ever met

My dog lies on the heat register, sometimes it’s her front end, sometimes the back end. With the heat pump running the air is about 85 degrees, when it’s cold enough for just the furnace to come on then it’s around 105 degrees. It doesn’t seem to hurt her. Right now her butt must be cold because she just lay on it and only the furnace is running.

Are these egg laying dogs?

My cats are vent hoggers, and none have baked yet. I do wonder what this does to the heating bill efficiency, though.

Left vent, Tenuto. Right vent, Coda.

Our pit used to lie in front of the pellet stove until she would get so hot she would be gasping and panting with all four legs in the air and her tummy exposed but she still wouldn’t move. Animals are funny!

My cats have long been involved in the study of radiators. As a field, radiator theory is maturing, but still not well respected by academia. We hope to change that & are starting a journal. Perhaps your dogs can submit an article for review.

We had a pom growing up that would lie/lay? near the electric baseboards. Every now and then we would smell a bit of singed fur…my mom would yell his name & he would move just enough to get his tail off the heating element.

After seeing a pal’s cats lie with bellies up in front of an open fire…wish I could bottle up that smug contentedness & sell it.

Sometimes you can’t hardly even touch my Doberman he is so hot from laying by the fireplace! He also lies on burning hot porch in the full heat of the sun.

Just watch out that the tags don’t get caught in the heat vent!

It just occurs to me to wonder if mice do this. I once found a mouse expired face-down on a floor heating vent in mid-winter. I always assumed it was malice, but maybe he was just a sauna mouse?
