Dog's poop is getting smaller

No we haven’t switched brands of food, but we did switch flavors nearly a bag ago from Merrick Grain Free Texas Buffalo to Merrick Grain Free Duck and some such…

Prior to switching flavors, I noticed dog’s stools were smaller. She didn’t seem to have much more frequency, and the consistency is normal. But over this last week, I’m noticing smaller still BM s… when she was ‘normal’ she’d past about 2 or 3 sections of poop, the length of my thumb. Gradually now, it’s declined to the point where she passes maybe the length of the first knuckle on my thumb. As in, the end of my thumb, to the knuckle just past my thumb nail.

Dog is behaving normally otherwise. Perhaps eating a little grass, but this is not unusual behavior for her.

FWIW, she completed treatment for Lyme/ Anaplasmosis about 6 - 8 weeks ago. I never saw any digestive issues from that. No vomitting then or now.

Any advice? Should I be concerned? And yes, soon as I come in for a landing, I’m bringing her to my vet.

It is possible that the proportions of plant products to animal products is higher in the Texas beef than in the Duck.

Think of plant products as adding fiber = more poop.

If your dog is healthy and not losing weight and eating a decent amount of food; you probably don’t need to worry.

Also possible that the antibiotics significantly changed her gut flora and this is the result. It might not be negative–she might be better at digesting her food now. A round of a good probiotic wouldn’t be a terrible idea, but if nothing changes, and she’s acting normal, it’s probably just something to file under “dogs are weird.”

My thoughts exactly. Can’t hurt, might help to give a probiotic.

She was on acidophilus and saccharomycies boularrdi during and shortly after coming off the doxy. Back when she had normal volume poop.
