Doing business with JILL BURNELL? BEWARE.

I am sorry if I offended you, and obviously I must not be well informed regarding patch.

My personal experience is that the patch articles I read tend to be a mix match of information contained in other stories, and can be confused / miss leading.

Kudos to this writer for going out and doing interviews regarding horse breeding and the economy, but he totally missed the boat on this story. It would be cool if he looked up the Sonoma County records (I have previously linked to them on this thread) and pointed out this breeder’s long list of defaults, and found the foreclosure on the ranch in Petaluma.

Unfortunately I have found patch articles unreliable.

Some breeders have had a “down economy” for years, having nothing to do with the national economy.
As for the address, in that area of Marin, they all get their mail in Petaluma, as there is no rural delivery. They also have 707 area codes, even though they are physically in Marin.

No offense. I get yelled at daily by folks who accuse me of bias/not doing my job or whatever (or just plain don’t like that the pic from their DUI arrest was posted) … It takes a lot to offend me! Very thick skin.

Just wanted to get it out there that we are professional journalists who take pride in their work and try very hard to get the news out that matters to our community.

I’m sure Brent would value your input. I encourage you to contact him.

A simple Google search would have led Brent to this thread where he could gather more information (if not facts) to help in his article.

A simple google search once he got the breeder’s name would have led Brent to this thread which would have provided more insight for his article (like the fact that she moved)

:lol: Though, you have to admit that 150 pages of mostly opinions, hearsay and rants is a lot to wade through. Just sayin’

All part of being a good, thorough journalist…

148 pages? The patch reporter might just not have the time to try to assimilate all that, verify etc. before the article needed to be published. These threads can wander far astray sometimes and be contradictory yet repetitive.

From one professional writer to another, I hope that Brent will dig in and do his homework, starting with a read through this thread.

And this professional writer agrees with this statement.

http://www.worldhorsewelfare.org

Does anyone think this organization may be of any benefit to the case? I believe they were the ones to deal with the Amersham case and had put Delia Stacey behind bars as well.

They are based in the UK, but could possibly provide some assistance or legal adivce?

I don’t write for a paper anymore, but this would make one hell of a piece for an experienced investigative journalist – someone with an appetite for justice, who really knows how to dig deep.

And why would anyone believe anything that Jill Burnell said about anything. [edit] perhaps she was unequipped to handle any stallion on earth.[/QUOTE]

Did I say I believed her? I just repeated what she told me. I have no idea as to the truth, but there would have been no reason to lie to me or make it up that I can see.

I have contacted him. His response was this:

I think the story I already ran will suffice. We have to presume innocence until proven guilty, so we can’t get into speculation or rumors, only facts presented to us from the Marin Humane Society investigators.

In regards to this paragraph in the Chronicle article:
According to Weems, on Dec. 26, two stallions got into a fight. Weems said a young stallion jumped out of his paddock and into another stallion’s pen. She stated that both animals were immediately attended to. While the stallion owners, veterinarians and the Burnells, who care for approximately 30 horses on the property, were deciding whether to take one of the stallions to a clinic for additional treatment, the Marin Humane Society responded to a complaint about the property, at which time they impounded one of the stallions and an older mare.

This sentence makes it sound like JB doesn’t own the stallions: “While the stallion owners, veterinarians and the Burnells”

Was that just odd phrasing or is there something going on?

I hope the FACTS of her outstanding arrest warrants have been passed along to the appropriate authorities in case she actually shows up at a hearing on 1/8.

Are you kidding??? From the pictures of her floor, I don’t think she needs to even go outside

SH:lol:

Yes but judgements in the county records forclosure, warrents etc are not hearsay. Causally linking the economy and the Jill Burnell disaster is miss leading. Add a photo that has nothing to do with the story. Well lets just say this little piece is not very informative.

“only facts presented to us from the Marin Humane Society investigators.”

I am surprised that the humane society gave Brent the wrong address for the farm.

I don’t think Brent is a horse person.

When you run a story about an abuse case and couple that with people speaking about “the economy giving rise to abandoned horses” it is done to effect the “story”. Writing 101 will tell you that.

In order to understand a better context for the story, reading some of these posts, err like the first one with photographs would have told the reporter a significant amount about the subject matter. I have not read 150 pages but have read plenty to know that this is not a breeder who has fallen on hard times. I sure hope he did not spend 60 hours on that story…
