Donating Riding Clothes

I’m trying to get the last of a pile of horse gear out of my house and I’ve got a place to donate all the horse clothing, but I need a place to donate the human clothing. Anyone got a place they like? Mostly looking at breeches and riding tights with a few shirts thrown in. Most of it’s fun colors, so not show gear, but a couple pairs of tan breeches. All of it’s in excellent condition and only going out the door because I’m clearing out my horse gear.

Anyone got suggestions? (Yes, I’ve tried selling it and I am so ****ing tired of dealing with other human beings on social media that I can’t take it any more.)

Do you have any rescues in your area that sell used stuff to raise money?

Is there a low income or special needs riding center that might benefit from free good riding clothes for their clients?

I’ve always donated mine to a local community thrift store. The community benefits and someone gets a good deal on riding clothes. I know I’m always excited to find good quality riding clothes at the thrift store.

My local county 4H holds a monumental tack sale every year. Consider donating the items to a 4H club. They may have a sale to raise funds or have a system to distribute to kids who need safe riding clothes

I consign mine at a local tack shop for a store credit. Recently I donated the unconsignable stuff to a therapeutic riding center’s tack sale. Some things they’ll keep for the riders or horses and the rest they’ll sell.

When I am totally over on-line sales (usually do one a year, 50-100 items or so over a week or two) --I take everything left and put it into one big lot --then offer it for $1.00 plus shipping. That takes care of all that didn’t sell.

Horse stuff specifically, I take what didn’t sell or probably won’t sell to the local Horse 4-H “tack swap” --I put everything on one table, neatly folded with a sign that says, “Free.” Then I leave.

One other thing I’ve done is take a bin of horse stuff --miss matched boots, old rugs (clean), unused saddle pads to a horse show, put it in an obvious spot, put the sign FREE on it, and leave. My bin generally disappears too.

Our handicapped riding program his HEAVILY funded --the don’t take used stuff --preferring to buy new —the only exception is they will take “used” trophies. They take off the ID plate and put on their own. I like having a place to take old trophies.

We have one of the best refuge barns anywhere 10 minutes from here. Private organization totally funded by private donations and buy-a-bale style fundraisers. I bring things up there, mine and my horse’s. They have periodic yard sales to sell what they cannot use.

They recently celebrated 150 years. They do not seek or accept public funds. Horses that are not adopted out stay there for there for the remainder of their lives.

Can folks please name their local places that take clothes? I’m willing to ship. I am not aware of a place local to me that takes clothes or this problem would already be solved. Definitely don’t want to deal with consignment. Definitely don’t want to continue to skulk around on Facebook trying to find a big tack sale that’s running on the one day a week I don’t work. If the answer is Goodwill, I’ll take it to Goodwill, but if there is somewhere I can ship several $100 worth of riding clothes to, I’d prefer to do that.

There is a new organization that takes consignment horse stuff. I first learned about them through the Retired Racehorse Project Makeover this year. They definitely take clothes. It’s called everythinghorses.com. I sent a bag of horse boots to them this week. Heck if you’re a size 28 breeches and just want to donate them to me—I’ll take them. Ha ha!!!

The local rescue here has a tack sale a couple of times a year. I bet they would be happy to have a pile of stuff to sell to benefit the rescue.

Here is the one coming up in November:

Contact info on their main FB page or they have a website https://beginagainfarms.com/

they are on Guidestar if you want to check them out https://www.guidestar.org/profile/58-2350261

The place I was thinking of is also called Begin Again Horse Rescue.

They have a little tack store of donated items that they sell to cover some expenses of the rescue.

They welcome all donations.

Ditto gradytb, if anyone has size 30 full seats that need a new home, I’m happy to pay to ship!

I’ve donated clothes to The Rider’s Closet before: https://www.georginabloomberg.com/the-riders-closet/

Description from their website:

" Founded by Georgina Bloomberg in 2006, The Rider’s Closet’s mission is to ensure that riding apparel is accessible to scholastic riding programs, pony clubs, equestrian camp programs, equine charities and individual riders in need. All of the new and gently used apparel provided by The Rider’s Closet has been generously donated to our program by corporate and individual donors. The program serves riders of all ages and at every level of horsemanship throughout the U.S. In 2019, The Rider’s Closet merged with the EQUUS Foundation."
