Dosing strength for Acetaminophen

I need math help - how many 500 mg tablets/capsules of Extra Strength Tylenol should I give (single dose) to a 1200 lb mare? I’m reading 20 or 30 mg (of Tylenol?) per Kg (horse’s weight?), but I’m suspicious of the numbers I get when I try to convert the LBs to KGs and the resultant amount of Tylenol. I think I’m missing a conversion amount somewhere. I google the weight conversion and get 544 Kg = 1200 Lbs, but I kinda lose the math after that. Is it 544 X 30? If so, that equals 16,320. If I divide that by 500 now, I get 32.64. So is it really 32 (or 33, rounding up) pills per dose, to be given twice daily?

Assuming that math is correct, how do you get them all down the horse?

20-30mg (yes of aceta) per kg (yes of body weight) twice a day is the typical dosing

Take the weight in pounds and divide by 2.2 to get kg. 1200lb is 545kg

545kg x 20 = 10,900mg
545 x 30 = 16,350mg

Then yes, divide those numbers by the mg in your acetaminophen, which could be 325 or 500 or 650 (iirc) to get the number of pills If you have the 500mg pills then it’s 22 up to 33 pills twice a day

Thanks JB!

So anyone have a good way of dosing them? Just throw the pills into the feed or…

I gave my 1100 pound gelding 26 500 mg of Tylenol 2x a day. I put them in a measuring cup w a bit of hot water and made a paste to put in a dose syringe- down the hatch.

You can also put them in the dose syringe and add hot water and shake. I’ve found those syringes cooks use to inject meat work better ( without the pointed needle, of course).

I used Tylenol. Generic pills are bigger. I could fit 26 pills of Tylenol in one dose. Genetic took two syringes at a time.

My mares both eat them just thrown in food with warm water on top to make a not too soupy mash. They also get only about a pound of food, but it doesn’t seem to be as bad to them as dewormer or banamine.

My mare will eat them for a dose or two then kind says…um yuck. Thankfully, I haven’t had to give her it for any extended period of time.

I use a syringe to dose. Put pills in syringe, add hot water, wait a few minutes, then dose.

~250#+ mini gets four 500mg generic Tylenol.
I dissolve the tablets in a very small amount of water - just enough to dissolve into paste.
Add maple syrup & suck up into a small dose syringe.
FYI:
You can alternate this with banamine (P O.) every 6 hours.

I put them in a coffee grinder with 2 Lifesaver peppermints, then I add the powder to their food. My horses think it’s a treat

There are some great ideas on here, thanks everyone! I have come up with creative methods for dosing other meds before but for some reason was a little stumped on this one. Thankfully maresy is not a picky eater, by any stretch, so I should be able to get them down her using at least one of these suggestions!

Thanks- I have the queen of pickiness who twice so far in her lifetime has caused New Bolton Center to say- well that’s the first time I’ve seen that in regard to an injury :woman_facepalming: (aka she’s had to have a LOT of meds)

I thought that too! I have 1000 500 mg pills and a coffee grinder headed my way from Amazon. Less than the price of a tube of Bute!

absolutely! I’ve learned so much over the years here

me too! I have learned an inordinately large amount of stuff here in the very long time I’ve been here. I joke sometimes (only half kidding) that “if it hasn’t happened on COTH, it hasn’t happened” LOL! But also “despite what you’ve personally experienced, here are 8 threads from COTH that say otherwise” because if it HAS happened, it’s on COTH. It’s a great “google for horse stuff”

So despite the vast majority of things here I’ve never experienced, I’ve been able to pass that info on to someone else because I read it here.

Things I’ve gleaned from COTH:
*When my TB got a mystery injury that caused his LF to blow up from shoulder to pastern (you could wring fluid out like a teabag :hushed:) & vet’s IV ABX weren’t addressing the swelling, it was from here I learned of naquazone.
Vet agreed to try it & swelling went down like a popped balloon. The Pee Like a Racehorse side effect was worth the relief we both got.
*BOSS for coats.
My 3 are soft & shiny year-round on a couple tblsp daily. Vets - mine & Purdue clinic - have commented on their condition.
The only grain I feed is whole oats (not to the mini, he gets TC Sr), no other supplement.
*TSC grooming rake (meant for dogs’ undercoat).
Best.Shedding.Tool.EVER!

There’s more & if they come to me I’ll add here.
This BB is a wealth of information, from a huge community of horsepeople. :+1:

We add water to the pills (Costco or Amazon), add a splash of the peppermint flavoring they sell in the coffee drink section, let it sit overnight, and add to food.

those coffee syrups have the advantage of a bit of sugar. Another clever idea. Picturing the feed room with a rack of flavor pumps like a coffee bar
