Double bridle for horse who LOVEs drop noseband??

I’m also open to curb suggestions but mostly looking for bridle suggestions.

Horse loves his drop noseband, solid in the bridle without getting overly strong most of the time. I tried him in the modified drop with the extra strap to hold the cheek pieces out of his eyes and he hated it. (I should note, the upper strap sat just about where a regular noseband might sit, not as high up as the PS Pioneer).

He needs the more black and white communication of the double for a lot of the canter work and I have a feeling that he is somewhat bothered by the regular noseband (same connection issues that I had before I found the drop noseband). Is there a double bridle out there that might make Mr Sensitive happier?

Currently eyeing the PS Paragon noseband as an option.

About the bit, he loves his snaffle/bradoon, does well with the curb (NS Transform) but if someone has a similar story and found a better option I’m open to hearing it.

From where I am the BIG problem with any type of dropped noseband (including the Micklem bridle and the figure-8 nosebands) is that the chin strap of the noseband has to go into the curb groove, exactly where the curb chain goes.

If the curb chain acts further back than the curb groove it hits the super thin and sensitive lower jaw bones and can be/is exquisitely painful for the horse.

I do not use any nosebands with the double bridle, and if I did it would be the old style hunt seat noseband.

I cannot think of any Weymouth or other curb bit that would “solve” this problem of also using a dropped noseband.

Put the curb bit mouthpiece right above the curb groove, that way the curb bit is gentler and operates like it was designed to operate, the curb chain falls into the correct position in the curb groove, AND there is usually enough room in the mouth for the bradoon without a horrible amount of wrinkles at the corners of the horse’s mouth.

Have fun with the double bridle! I find it excellent for “explaining” to the horse how I prefer the horse to react to the bit.

I think she’s looking for double bridles to use on a horse who goes in a drop noseband on his snaffle bridle. Not to use a drop with a double bridle.

@OP—I have a horse who goes great in a drop with an eggbutt snaffle, but he also goes well in the Tota noseband. His double is the same type of bits as the snaffle and he wears the Tota.

For him it’s about stability of the bit in his mouth.

You might try a chin strap. It might not help but it’s cheap. I’ve found it helped my horse who likes a bit to be more stable in his mouth.

Thanks, yes looking for a double bridle, drop noseband is only for the snaffle.

I have never tried the Tota, and have always been a bit offput by them after seeing how tight a lot of people make them. I wish it were easier to try stuff like this!

For my boy I’m not sure how much of it is stability, he goes great in his loose ring with the drop, I think it has to do with where the pressure is on his face (or isn’t).

I found one of the nosebands used for $25 and tried it on both horses. My gelding liked it a lot, my mare doesn’t care either way–but she does wear her nosebands loose–her double is a Tota because it was the cheapest brown double I could find–it was on super sale!

Good luck on your search, I do wish it were easier to rent/borrow some of these newer anatomical styles.

Well I went ahead and ordered the PS paragon noseband. It should work with my current bridle and I’m hopefully that it’s design will sit high enough to appease the boy. I’ll give an update when I’ve had a chance to try it

New noseband arrived today. Happy with the quality. Got a full size (my guy can wear cob or full size) and I’m glad I did, amazingly the chin strap was only barely long enough but otherwise it fit great.

First reaction is why did no one ever tell me that they have rubberized keepers on their rolled bridle work. Mind blown. And the good news is that the pony also seemed to like it. It definitely keeps the pressure off his lower molars. He was more solid in the contact and as the ride went on he got quieter in his mouth. I don’t know if it’ll solve the open mouth problems but it is an improvement.
