Double D Trailers NC

Does anyone have any experience with these trailers? They are made in North Carolina and sold factory direct to the customer. They seem quite reasonably priced. They are steel frames with “galvaneal” treatment. They claim that they are lighter than most other steel trailers. Here is the website:

I have a friend who has had one for a couple of years - she likes it a lot and has only had a couple of minor things to deal with - like a tie ring broke and the company was great to work with on it. (The guy said, yeah, we want the tie ring to break instead of having the horse pull parts of the trailer out!).

So, I’m interested to hear what other peoples’ experiences might have been. Especially if you or someone you know has had one for more that a couple of years. I tried to do a search and the board search engine spit out the name for some reason.

Oh, I do! I have one and I LOVE it. It is a Rawhide 4H slant with 10’ LQ and a slide out. We have had it about two years now and it sits outside and has no rust at all. Also, the quality of workmanship is excellent. It is solid, well built and tows beautifully. We have put close to 20,000 miles on it in two years also…it has been to Wyoming and back, etc… so we’ve really tested it well.

The LQ are very well done also with solid wood cabinets and nice touches. Definitely above the norm for most of the LQ I see. I don’t they claim they are lighter than other steel trailers but rather that they are not that much heavier than aluminum…which is true.

One of the best features is the “tackaround” tack compartment that is on hinges and the entire thing fully loaded swings out of the way to make the rear of the trailer fully open like a stock trailer. It makes loading much easier and you don’t have a narrow door to enter like most slant trailers (unless you collapse the tack room by having to unload it first). I have had several people comment on that now and how innovative and useful a feature that is.

The company has been fantastic to deal with also. I highly recommend these trailers.

Brand new! We did add some springs to our 3/4 ton truck also so it doesn’t sit quite a low now as it did in these early pics. The Duramax truck does a very good job with this very large trailer also.

Wow! Your trailer is Bee-yu-tee-full! Thanks for sharing all the pictures too. My friend also has the tack-around and really likes it too. I was concerned that the weight of the tack might be hard on the pull-out mechanism, but she hasn’t had any trouble with it and it sounds like you haven’t either.

You’re absolutely correct - they say that the weight is fairly comparable to aluminum.

You are welcome! Thanks also for the complements on the “mother ship” as we call it! It is our first LQ trailer and our first custom trailer. Double D did a lot of custom options for us so we can easily do box stalls in the back for mares and foals also and solid dividers. They truly were wonderful to work with and we had a few minor issues that they fixed free.

They installed racks for corral panels on the sides and they were pretty quick too for a custom trailer…about 6 weeks from order to delivery…free delivery too!

The tack around works great and I’ve had no problems at all with it.

The LQ are very comfortable and we’ve taken it camping in the mountains for non horsey vacations also.

There are some things, like 15" wheels and 3500# axles and only being 6’6" wide that really would bother me–and that’s with the deluxe trailer. To upgrade is extra money. On the two horse straight load, everything that would make the trailer capable is extra. Price goes from 11,500 to over 17k when all the things that make the trailer comfortable for horse and human are added.

Very reasonably priced. Hauls like a dream with our F-250 7.3l Turbo Diesel. Mine is an XW/XT since I have bigguns.

I’m not sure what you mean by “capable?” The trailers are standard at 7 ft tall but they do make extra large ones for those who want them. Why should extra sized be “standard?” I don’t need that as my horses are not large. I think originally they were more for stock horse type folks but I think more and more they are building larger and now offer an aluminum option.

The price for a galvaneal trailer compared to a similar brand name trailer in aluminum is much much less. I paid $40,000 for that LQ trailer with a slide out which was an expensive option on it’s own. That same trailer in a C & C without the slide (4 star spinoff) is about $80,000. A Sundowner, which is much chintzier in the interior with particle board cabinets would easily run $70,000. I’ve had a Trailet also and it was no where near as well built or as solid as this DD.

I guess it’s all in what you want. I wanted steel and the security of a steel skin and frame and I like the corrosion resistance of galvaneal. You can get a way cheaper steel trailer like an Adam that will rust in two years or can pay more for an aluminum and have other issues/advantages. I still think they are a good value and excellent quailty for the price and they stand behind their trailers unlike Sundowner and several other makes that have been fraught with problems.

Thank you SO Much for this info. I know EquiSpirit is all about safety & comfort in their trailers - I’ve been drooling over them - so if they’re having Double D build their trailers, that says a lot about how competent Double D is.

Also, thanks for sharing the pictures of your trailer - it certainly is ‘GAWJUS!’

I currently have an extra tall all-aluminum Sooner Revolution 2 horse bumper pull. I’m thinking at some point of moving up to a 2 horse w/living quarter - and therefore gooseneck. I’m just in the early stages of exploration, so have been searching old threads for peoples’ experiences with different brands.

I use my BO’s Adventurer 2h to haul and it pulls so great! The company is wonderful to work with as well. I have had questions about her trailer she couldn’t answer, so I called them and they were very helpful.

A student of mine has a two horse bumper pull slant load with dressing room and the swing out tack. I personally don’t like the swing out tack, it is cumbersome. The trailer though is nice and held up well for them, no rust, paint chipping etc. It seems pretty small in side, I’d want taller and wider personally but her large pony and 16 hand horse load and haul fine in it.

So where can one find and order the Equibreeze trailers? There is nothing about them other than the one used trailer on the Equispirit website. I googled and got a website for an EquiBreeZe trailer that was pure gibberish. It could not have had anything to do with Equispirit. The EquiBreeZe site listed models with the descriptions all the same, in Latin, with no links; and no contact information, except for the host server.

The EquiBreeze is, truly, a brand new option from EquiSpirit. This is their way of making a solidly built, safe trailer a wee bit more affordable to a greater market share. The one bumper pull you see on the EquiSpirit site is the first BP model and I own the very first GN model.

Tom, the owner of EquiSpirit, is working on the website as I type. They’ve only “saved” the domain name. I know he took extensive pictures and video of our gooseneck in production and when it was finished.

I looked into Double D’s entry-level 2H Adventurer about a month ago. Seemed like a nice trailer, but at $7800 although it’s everything I wanted, I found a comparable quality/size/features trailer that was much cheaper–$5250 + $575 shipping. Now, Double D offers free shipping but even paying for shipping for the other one, it was much less.

The other trailer I found for $5250 was a Bee/K & K Wrangler. Also a steel trailer with galvaneal siding, and was enclosed with windows vs. having the stock open sides like the Double D. And the K & K came with a sliding saddle rack but no bridle hooks which the Double D had, however I could easily have a welder add bridle hooks to the K & K if I wanted. I think the Bee was a little heavier than the Double D, but also wasn’t a big concern for me.

When and if I can buy a new one, I’m going for the Bee, I think. But certainly the Double D’s seem like very nice trailers for the price, and maybe when you are getting into the higher end/larger models they are a better deal.

This thread is relatively old…Wondering if there are updates?? I know Double D is offering more options to the owners of warmbloods and larger horses. Does anyone have experience with their newer model trailers? I would love to hear about your experience, particularly with regard to the Safe Tack option and Reverse Load. Thanks so much for any feedback!

Also, does anyone know of other manufacturers that are producing the same galvaneal frame with aluminum skin, fiberglass roof and Rumberer floors. All are great design solutions that have been incorporated in the last 10 years or so.

Hawk trailers and Equispirit trailers fit your description. I believe Hawk is still building Equispirit.

I absolutely love my Double D one horse slant load trailer!! The quality is amazing and it hauls like a dream. It has lots of space for all of my stuff with a dressing room and the swing out tack locker. As a company, they were incredibly easy to deal with and they were extremely patient with all of my questions. Lots of choices to customize too! I can’t say enough good things about my trailer.
