Who do we like to see doubled up? Who do we definitely want to avoid?
Is there any evidence that using a stallion from the same stam as the mare consolidates wanted characteristics?
What about Darco? My little mare needs power and leg length. I really like a few stallions with Darco (ie Glasgow ) in them, but she’s an Orlando (heartbreaker/ darco ) is that a terrible idea?
Always when doubling up you could be doubling up on the good points or the bad points of a stallion. I think it depends a little to on what has come through each generation too. Darco brings size so maybe if you have a little mare that is ok.
You should have your mare evaluated by someone knowledgeable. Conformation/movement/temperment and atttitude about training. All of these as well as her pedigree factor in when choosing a mate. Most of today’s sporthorses have the same ancestor more than once. The placement (two free generations is usually the acceptable way) and sex balanced is preferable. There are negative nicks and conformation faults you don’t want to double up on. Has she been inspected? An inspector could help you as could a breeder who works with these factors such as Majestic Gaits.
Thank you! Yes, that was a thought, for sure.
I was recommended Grand Slam for my Clinton x Heartbreaker mare by VDL, so I guess Heartbreaker is a goer?
Candy de Nantuel has Quidam twice and he looks a nice horse.
I do always think of Rex Z when line breeding/inbreeding comes up… Now that is quite the double up!
Yes, doubling up is a tiny piece of the puzzle. I have a different thread that has a detailed description of my mare. Please check it out (if you have already, sorry, I just don’t remember who all has posted). It’s the post titled Orlando/Indorado/Rex Magna mare.
I was hoping to discuss just doubling up in this thread but got zero replies, so used my mare as an example.
Yes, I have understood that several sires can be used almost infinitely (Corde, Lord, Ladykiller, Ramiro) whereas others should be doubled up more cautiously. I’ve heard of these examples:
corrado: yes if temperament is rideable and canter is uphill
Landgraf :watch the hind leg conformation
capitol: too many crosses and you may end up with too old school of a horse
then I’ve heard to avoid (unless you REALLY know your mare family) doubling up Calypso II,but crossing calypso II with Calypso I is fine ? Which also means don’t double up contender
I’ve also heard no to Carthago (weak back I believe?)
I’d love more examples. I’m guessing, for example no to baloubet for conformation reasons and no to clinton (corrado) for temperament. I’ve heard you need to be cautious with heartbreaker for temperament and size. I haven’t seen specific Capitol sons doubled up a lot, so can you double up Capitol but it should be done through different sons/daughters? What about any younger examples? I’m hoping some of the very well studied breeders on here can educate me. And also correct any beliefs I’ve posted above if there are incorrect ones.
thanks again Cothers.
