Downtown Lexington Horse Expo & other fun things to do

Just wanted to say that the Horse Expo going on at the Downtown Lex Convention center is very nice and worth going to for a couple of hours. There was some good shopping, my girls got to meet Gina Miles and see her medal and get her autograph, and an Australian man gave a wonderful demo with his Aussie stock horses. The vendors there are a little sad they are not getting more foot traffic. Please go support them if you can.

There is a lot going on downtown as well, with live music in the evenings, and a wonderful little local artisans fair in Triangle Park. All worth a look.

Good restaurant on Main St. downtown called Alfalfa. Healthy fare, lots of vegetarian dishes, casual cafe place.

Thanks for the update. We’re planning on going there next Thursday when we don’t have an event at WEG to go to.

Expo is awesome!

Another plug for the expo downtown! The mongolian art is breathtaking! Lots of freebies and enthusiastic venders. The Aussie Guy is not to be missed! Enter KER’s ticket drawing-
we are now enjoying 3-day dressage thanks to them! There’s a park a few blocks down with a huge video screen broadcasting the games live, great food, abundant drink, and a street party in the evening. Check it out!

Okay, this may be a silly question, but how do you get to the “downtown” area from, say, KHP? I am looking forward to the expo as well as the WEG events. Thanks.

I’m not there yet, but I’ve read reports of LexTran buses running from the downtown transit center to the KHP every half hour. Here’s the schedule and you’ll find more info around the site. http://www.lextranonthemove.org/WEG.html

Another fun thing to do is go by Keeneland very early to catch morning works and eat in the track kitchen. The kitchen opens at 6.

To find the kitchen, park your car and scan the horizon for the black water tower. You’ll probably end up walking toward the grandstand then banging a right down into the backside on a little road that leads straight through to the kitchen.

Once the race meet starts Friday next week (10/8), the kitchen will start serving lunch, too.

You can get more info on the Keeneland website.

Exiting KHP, if you turn right, take I-75 south to Exit 115 Newtown Pike/Rt 922.
Follow Newtown Pike south to Main St.
Turn Left (east) on Main St. and in a few blocks you will be “downtown.”

If you turn left on exiting KHP, turn right on Newtown Pike/Rt 922 (at the 4-way stop/flashing red light) and proceed as above.

The International Equestrian Festival is near Triangle Park.

Thanks, Mares Tails! I’m looking forward to heading downtown.

The downtown horse expo is in the Rupp Center building — everyone knows Rupp Center it seems.

We made the trek downtown and were disappointed. The painted horses placed around town were fun to see, but the Horse Festival disappointing. Most of the booths were jewelry, paintings, etc. Minimal tack and what was there was Western. VERY pushy sales people in a couple of booths-some people selling some kind of jewelry that aligns your protons, and will cure anything you or your horse may be suffering from , and the magazine people. I would be far more likely to order one of those magazines if you gave me a free copy, and stuck a voucher inside for a discounted subscription price. Being pushy turns me off. There is a gift shop upstairs in the shopping center that had some nice touristy equine stuff.
