Draft Size Crochet fly mask?

Newbie to this forum. I am trying to help a friend locate and purchase one of those crochet fly veils/masks whatever they are called. He has an 18’1 Percheron/Tb which he events and also trail rides. We are in the land of the blankety blank deer flies and I have discovered that the crocheted veil really helps my little QH when we go out. He thinks his horse could benefit from the same thing. Unfortunately, his horse cannot wear any of the conventional sized ones so I was hoping maybe someone on this forum could direct me to a site where I could get a proper size for the big guy.

Thank you in advance!

A couple of places I would check would be
Big Black Horse they have the full body string sheets and some face string thing-ys

As with the other suggestions - it is probably best to call them and ask about the crochet earnets in the size you are looking for

Meader Supply (in NH - website is not that good but they stock a wide range of draft supplies

Iowa Valley Carriage Sandra McKee has a reputation of finding all sorts of hard to find stuff http://www.iowavalleycarriage.com/index.php

Best of luck and let us know where you DO finally find them

Here ya go. http://www.blackdogfarm.biz/ModShop/ShowCategory/8649/#bottom While they’re not “crochet” ones, they are IMO better. The velcro stays put and they truly fit the bigguns. (That’s my Percheron in her first set - just got her a new one last week). Reasonably priced and quickly shipped.

ETA: Before I put it on her, I do spray it with Cutters bug repellant

Oh Emm Gee, Chocomare do you have any idea how long I’ve been looking for those?

I asked at Equine Affaire and they handed me one for mules… that was too funny, they just couldn’t understand that it isn’t his EARS that are big, it’s his forehead!

I can relate. Trust me…I looked for years. IF I got lucky to find one with long enough ear pockets, it NEVER was wide enough at the poll.

Now, don’t freak over the cha-cha-ness of the ones pictured. She’ll do plain colors too. The new ones are all dark gray with black velcro.

I have drafts and use the cashel fly masks for turnout. For riding or driving they make another style. Go to smartpak to see them.
valley vet might also carry them.
Though not a crochet or just for ears, I find if you need something for their ears, their eyes also need protection.

I just made new, larger fabric ears for our crochet ear covers.

Our horses are not Drafts, but Cleveland Bay horses are KNOWN for the size of their ears. We have gotten so we can recognize a Cleveland or Cleveland crossbred, out working in a field at a show, by their ears!! Not wrong too often when we ask about horse’s breeding.

Nothing fit our animals, so I just redid the ears for our horses. Was not hard, with my sewing machine. We show with the ear covers, so the crochet ones were what we had to have for the better appearance.

Again, my horse doesn’t have big hears- he has a broad poll.

Choco, the colors won’t deter me, I kind of liked the “random” idea! Can’t wear them at dressage shows anyway, it’s only for schooling (he HATES gnats in his ears!)

Thank you

Many thanks! I will follow up for my friend and see what we can get the big guy… and he’s just big all over. I tried my Cashel bug mask for riding today on him… waaay too small. He went without anything and was miserable for our whole ride. My QH had at least the tassels and the ear covers (by the way, the ear covers on our crochet mask are too big - it’s black and he’s palomino so he looks like oh, I don’t know, Batman, Mickey Mouse, part mule… but it does alleviate a lot of the annoyances from the deer flies.)

Hey, Choco or others, does anyone know of a comfort/padded poll bridle with a nice broad poll? Unfortunately I need the lower half of the bridle to be more average size, but that poll always gets me.

I got my two today- very cute! Can’t wait to try them on him, they look soooo much more comfy than the crocheted ones!

If you want a driving bridle then you’re in the right place.

If you want a riding bridle then you’re not.

We moved the thread to HC from Driving, where other folks with larger steeds may find the information of interest or have info to share.

Thanks,

I didn’t know you were mtk9122 as well! Gonna be hard for you to keep the two names straight?

I just got super frustrated that Dressage extensions didn’t have a cavesson big enough for my broad headded fellow. Bobby’s tack bridles tend to run huge in the oversize department, and what I ended up doing was ordering bridle parts to make my own custom sized bridle. I got the oversized cavesson, browband and crown piece, and cob sized cheek pieces because my horse doesn’t have a long face. It actually fits and looks great! I went through eqtack’s website.

I did the same thing as Fitte for my Percheron… bought a separate browband (mit a wee bit o’bling), then ordered a Bobby’s crown and cheek pieces in Warmblood size. Fits perfectly.

(Psssst, there’s a great lady over on Bits and Barter who has good prices on the Bobby’s bridles… wink, wink)

I checked eqtack, and they don’t have the padded crowns. Oh boo.

If anyone is still looking for this item (as I was) you can buy custom draft size crocheted fly veils from certain artists on Etsy. Send measurements and voila!
