Drag Packs

I was at a meeting this week with the other New England hunts. We were discussing the lack of educational opportunities for drag packs like our own. It was stated that the MFHA only recognizes 17 drag packs. I was frankly very surprised by that low number as the New England district alone has 9 and I quickly came up with 5 or 6 more right off the top of my head. Does anyone have an accurate count of recognized drag packs in the US. I know there are more in Canada but I think he was not including them in the 17. It might be nice to have both numbers. The drag packs in the US and all recognized drag packs.
Thanks for your help

That figure sounds about right to me.

In Florida there is only one recognised Drag pack.

That would be “Misty Morning Hounds”.

In Georgia there are none that I know of.

Some hunts do hunt live and drag, but they are normally registered as Live hunts, they only hunt a drag occasionally.

I actually did count one day last month. Went through COTH roster of I believe 09-10. 19 listed themselves as solely drag hunts. I was just curious, thought there’d be more than that. Others also listed they hunted drag in addition to something else, but that wasn’t included in my count. I know at least one that was in Canada.

Does your count include the newly registered Woodbury-Litchfield Hills pack (CT) I read about in Covertside?

actually there are two in FL. Lonesome Palm Hounds is also officially a drag pack.
I believe Myopia up north (it escapes me where) is a drag pack also.

In New England we have 1)Guilford, 2)Myopia, 3)Norfolk, 4)Old North Bridge, 5)Fairfield, 6)Mt Cardigan, 7)Wentworth, 8)Woodbury Litchfield (newly recognized) 9) Green Mountain.
We can also add 10) Smithtown on Long Island
11) Misty Morning and 12) Lonesome Palms in Florida
13) Long Lake in Minnesota, 14)Spring Valley in NJ
I also believe Aiken Hounds in SC? any more you can come up with? I’m pretty sure there is another in the south and maybe a couple more in lower NY or NJ
Thanks for your help. I’m very interested in getting a more accurate count.

Yes AIken Hounds is a drag pack, they are actually the oldest drag pack in the US still hunting (may be oldest RECOGNIZED pack but in any event, they’re old)

If I think of any others I’ll let you know. Doesn’t the MFHA have a list? I would imagine that would a much easier to get the info.
I would imagine there are probably many unrecognized packs out and about, but they must have a list of at least the recognized ones.

Woodbrook in WA and Fraser Valley in B.C., Canada. Was trying to find any that were close. Most clustered in East. Only two were not as far, Long Lake Hounds being one. The other is in a different state. Have it written down somewhere.

HHMM,

It seems that MFHA no longer lists this info.

It used to list ALL the details of each hunt , by state.

It was very easy to check out all the details of each hunt.

I cant find that info on-line anywhere.

Can anyone post a link to the Hunt Roster? That used to have all the info on it.

Traders Point Hunt was established in 1934 and is located in central Indiana. TPH provides drag hunting mid-August through February on Wednesdays and Saturdays or Sundays, weather permitting

2009 Chronicle Hunt roster (all details) http://www.chronofhorse.com/sites/default/files/HuntRoster2009.pdf

I think Myopia is the oldest Drag Pack in Usa.

founded in 1882 by J. Murray Forbes.[1] The name “Myopia” is due to some of its founding members having come from the Myopia Club in Winchester, Massachusetts,

Not sure if or when , they started out as a drag pack.

Ottawa and Wellington-Waterloo in Ontario are both drag packs.

Add Middleton Place in Charleston to that list also. I thought they were drag but didn’t post before because I wasnt sure. But that link to the COTH hunt roster should be helpful to the op.

**several hunts that are live hunts also run drags on ceremonial days, such as opening or closing, in order to ensure that it is not a blank day when there are a large number of guests

Well done…
The MFHA site only links you to the websites for each hunt so it was hard to get an accurate count but the Chronicle roster was way more helpful and less time consuming.
I came up with 21 drag packs in US and with the addition of the newly recognized Woodbury Litchfield Hills in Ct it should be 22. That does not include packs that list both drag and live and packs in Canada. I added 6 to my already growing list with your help.
Thanks again

Click on the link someone posted above to the COTH Hunt Roster issue. It lists every pack in alphabetical order with a description that states whether they are live or drag.
