Dressage Girth help! Ever heard of Stillwater Mohair dressage girths?

I have 3 girths. Different materials, but all the same size. My boy has packed on some weight and I need a new (larger) one.

I am thinking alot about how girthy he is (always has been). I recently read something somewhere about how somebody’s horse was that way and that switching to a longer girth solved the issue. Hmmm…

I’m not looking to switch to a “long” girth - it wouldn’t work on my saddle anyway - but am just going up one size from my current.

I’d like some suggestions as to materials, brands, shapes. He’s a thin skinned TB. In the summer I have a fleece one I like to use to help wick away sweat. Otherwise I have a leather one, and one that appears to be neoprene-ish (it’s a Lettia, and I really don’t like it).

I came across “Stillwater Mohair” dressage girths. You can see it on the Riding Warehouse website. Has anybody used one of these? I know about mohair cinches from my western days, but never knew they made an english one! I also know about the ‘contoured’ shape (aka, roper style) due to my western background, and I know that my horses always preferred that over a straight cinch.

Thoughts anyone??? TIA!

I don’t know about the one on that web site but dover has been selling mohair dressage girths for years, and I used one exclusively for one delicate skinned horse. Make sure you get one with keepers for the girth billets. You can hand make them but it easier of they are there.

It is Catherine Haddad that advocates short billets/long string girths http://www.usdf.org/EduDocs/Tack/Girth_up.pdf

Distance Depot carries Montana Cincha mohair girths, you can special order solid black.

I use a contoured Montana Cincha short girth that I custom ordered in all black from Action Rider Tack. I had an extra set of keepers added for my long billets. My gelding isn’t girthy so no input there, but it keeps his saddle from sliding forward or sideways and doesn’t have to be tightened down to a death grip to do so, since the mohair itself is sort of grippy. Although I remain offset girth-curious, I am very happy with this girth.

Riding Warehouse’s Stillwater Mohair Dressage Girth is the best! I have 2 of these and they have held up beautifully for 2 years, my horse gets girth galls from any other girths. They are so well made, I hand wash them in Woolite and air dry them weekly in the summer and they still look brand new!

I have 2 of the Montana Cincha Endurance Roper Style girths-short, contoured girths-very very excellent quality, I also wash regularly in a woolite and air dry. They have both maintained their “aliveness” i.e. stretchiness for years. They are the only girths my horse tolerates!
