Does anyone know where I can find (if there is such a thing) dressage cones with letters on them that are not the flimsy small cones that blow over. I’m thinking more like a true traffic cone or something with some weight to it. I currently use the markers that are metal that you step on to put them into the ground, but that doesn’t work well in my arena, so I have to set up jump standards and place the letters to lean on the standard. I’d prefer just an easy cone or something. Any ideas?
Premier Equestrian sells the ones they use at shows. I use the large white buckets from Home Depot (paint department) and get the stick on letters for them.
If it is in your budget, definitely the Prestige Equestrian markers mentioned previously. Pricey at $789.00 for a set of twelve. There is currently a 5 percent online order discount.
Cons: fire ants love to build concealed mounds inside them.
I ordered large white traffic cones from an online provider this summer. Forgot the name. I could choose small, medium or large. They are heavier than the cheap plastic ones at Stateline or Dover. I think I got 8 of them for $105 and that included FREE shipping. Just Google traffic cones, you’ll see a lot of options. Then we stenciled letters on with Krylon paint. Easy!
These come in slightly cheaper than the Premier Equestrian at about $645 on current exchange rates, but definitely heavier at just over 7.7lbs.
They also do a slightly lighter set without the plant pot holder at 6.6lb.
You’d need to contact them for shipping costs.
I’ve used Polyjump multi-jump blocks and they are very robust.
Thank you all! I appreciate it.
You can just order large traffic cones, and then order vinyl letters from Etsy, or have someone with a Cricut machine make them for you.
But then you know where to put the fire ant poison, right?
I think it depends upon whether you are putting them out from time to time or leaving them outdoors all the time.
Cones are a cheap solution, but IME they are difficult to weight and stabilize to stay in place through bad weather.
Best inexpensive method I saw used buckets. They had lots of white supplement buckets so used those. Used the stick on letters. They took off the handles and placed them first. Then filled with rocks, dirt and sand. (If your bucket has a good lid that stays on, you can use less fill, Otherwise you want to fill to avoid standing water when it rains)
In addition fire ants, I also have wasps making nests inside the rails at the points where the side rail sections meet. I have found myself in many a foot race (me) vs mad winged insects when I am moving rails. This despite regular spraying around the arena perimeter with wasp spray. Another problem is that my resident squirrels love gnawing on the tops of the letter cones and the rail supports. I guess Premier Equestrian makes a tasty product.
