Dressage stallion advice for German Riding Pony mare

Needing some advice…

Mare is a German Riding Pony, Mentos x Hauptstutbuch (Nibelungenheld). 14.2, lovely gaits though a bit short coupled. Very sensitive and a bit hot…

Hoping to breed a dressage prospect for myself; ideally in the 14-15.2 range as I’m 5’0. I’m an ammy and horses are my joy/hobby/fun, so the most important thing will be temperament.

I’m looking for a smaller stallion (GRP, Conn, small WB) known to pass on temperament and trainability. I’ve looked into Popeye, FS Daily Hero, Ridley, Dauphin, and Don Hill. Of these, any thoughts or suggestions regarding how they may cross with this mare? Any other stallions I should add to the list?

Oh, and preferably chilled standing in US/Canada.

Thanks!!!

You should check out our sweet boy. Blue Ridge Monroe. He is14.3 with 9.5 inches of bone. Schooling 3rd and 4th. Superb temperament which he passes to his babies. Impressive movement.

He’s on facebook. I would link but on mobile and tech challenged!! I can send more info if you would like.

Go to the link shown below. There are Weser-Ems approved pony stallions at the end - starting on page 145. Weser-Ems is a highly respected German pony and small horse registry affiliated with the Oldenburg Verband. Their inspections, etc., are handled in North American by The Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society.

I would be careful about stallions with horse genes (like Don Hill and others on your list), because they could pass on height - although this may not be an issue for you, since you say you would be okay if the foal goes to 15.2h.

There are a bunch of fabulous GRP stallions and pony stallions on the New England Dressage Assoc. Stallion service auction list! Check it out!

I think Donarweiss could be a nice option

The perlino Connemara stallion Fiontar Mac Tire has three excellent gaits and throws some height and a BRILLIANT temperament.

Dauphin is a great option. Super temperament, smaller, and an added bonus, he is being offered in the Canadian Hanoverian stallion service auction.

Thank you Virginia Bred! I haven’t had a chance to be on the computer today.

Dauphin has several produced FEI horses. He does not seem to produce height & the foals are more of the mare’s size. A+++ temperament

Kynmont Cooper O’Grady is a lovely modern sport type connemara stallion currently competing at 4th level in dressage–and quite successfully. He may not have the size exactly what you are looking for as my understanding is he is only 14.2. Ive heard nothing personally regarding temperament on this stallion–he as least appears to be quite rideable.

Ard Celtic Art successfully competed through 4th level with scores in the 70s–Art can bring the size but does not appear to be entirely consistent with it-just a guess but seems like he is about 50-50 with size when bred to pony mares ( I could be wrong). My Art Daughter out of a 14.1HH mare is 15.2. Art is available by frozen.

We also stand the young Black Purebred Connemara Stallion R. Blue Moon-his temperament and trainability are phenomenal. He is easily handled by a child and is just about to go in to be started under saddle (he is 3 in april). He does have very good gaits with super hind leg articulation and plenty of scope and reach and ground cover. His sire was successfully shown through 3rd Level open and was an Approved stallion with the Weser Ems. I’ve also successfully competed his half brother up 2.3 (Hoping to come out at 3rd this season). He is likely to bring size and some substance without being clunky or drafty or to light and weedy. His siblings are 14.3- 15h-15.2–average height being around 15h. Blue has two foals arriving this spring with a very nice selection of mares coming to him in 2016 including WB, TBs and Pony Mares.

Thank you all for the input and suggestions! Added a few more stallions to the list…

A few questions–

  1. Regarding the caution to be careful with stallions with horse genes: Apart from the risk of getting an offspring in the odd 15’2 range (which is fine with me) are there any other risks or issues? Mostly wondering about offspring with odd proportions (horse legs with pony body).
  2. Any other thoughts/comments on the above mentioned stallions? Ideally looking for a stallion that has proven upper-level dressage potential with a reputation for passing on trainability and temperament to the offspring.

Again, many thanks!

we have done Pony x Pony, Horse x Pony, and Pony x Horse crosses. Pony x Pony will always give the best quality and most consistent type. Mainly because you are breeding two things that are more alike than different.

I personally like the Horse x Pony crosses to retain more pony quality, character and type through the mother. I do think you have to pay strict attention to type when choosing a horse stallion for a pony mare. Like I would personally avoid choosing a massively over built stallion for a petite pony mare.

Pony x Horse crosses do tend to be more variable depending on how the parents are bred. Just a personal observation. These I think can be very good or nothing special–little bit hit or miss.

I know nothing of breeding, but I can attest to the temperament and trainability of exvet’s Pro A Resolute (Welsh Cob stallion ). I have a coming-four-year-old filly bred by exvet and she’s awesome and has been so easy and fun.

You should be fine with those that have been suggested. Dauphin is 16 hands and since your mare is 14.2, I’m betting you’d be fine.

Hi Belle, I just sent you a message.

Another option you might be interested in is Windy Isles Get Smart (Wildwych Eclipse x *Fairyhill Queen by Fairyhill Hawk) 14.1 hand palomino Connemara with chrome. He’s just getting show career under saddle and has done very, very well in dressage and jumping. He’s got substance and wonderful pony character - best part of him is his brain. The color is just the icing on the cake

I bred him and have had several of his siblings/relatives from his mareline and they are all people-orientated, social, smart, and thinking ponies. Not hot and with great work ethics. I really enjoy the line as far as trainability and desire to please - their athleticism is an added bonus.

His owner in Canada used to breed warmbloods and is now switching to a more sport pony breeding program - she’s not very tall and ponies suit her better sizewise but she wanted to keep the athleticism and gaits. I think she’d be a good one to talk to you. Get Smart’s first foals are coming this year and a nice mix of thoroughbred and warmblood mares.

Another option would be Evans Providence of the Night, now in Virginia.

Couple of updated photos of our boy Blue since this thread popped up again: [URL=“https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207702728819196&set=picfp.1021903725.10207702728779195&type=3&theater”]

I can’t believe no one posted them yet, but it would be hard to go wrong with any of the ponies here: http://www.roselanesporthorses.com/

Golden State is top quality, and has proven to be producing very well. I also love Golden West but he is only available frozen. They both seem to be very AA/child friendly, which is a big draw for me (because even pros like easy, kind, and highly trainable mounts!). I have breedings planned with both stallions. And Petit Marc Aurel is almost enough to make me breed to a grey, he’s so lovely.
