Dripping "syrup" from sheath when sedated

One of my horses (3 year old) was lightly sedated with Dorm for the farrier yesterday and he was dripping a fluid that looked like maple syrup from his sheath. He was not dropped. I called my vet and we are going to do a urinalysis and CBC (for starters). Has anyone else has ever seen anything like this and what was the outcome?

He had a UTI incase anyone was wondering.

Thank you for the update. Good information to have.

I have never heard of that. Thanks for the update.

Had he been acting uncomfortable? Its good that you caught this when you did.

Not on the ground, however, he had been extremely ill behaved under saddle (I thought it was a saddle fit/sore back/ulcer issue… he was fine lunging but bit me in the foot when I mounted and asked him to walk off… then reared straight up… this happened multiple days… just wouldn’t go forward and was super crabby), which was out of character. I’m hoping this was the reason for that behavior… I’m not riding him again until he finishes his antibiotics.

Just out of curiousity, was that the only abnormal physical thing? Urine colour, smell, frequency?

UTIs can be difficult to spot. Hope he is back to his usual self soon.

I can’t honestly say I track his pee habits closely, however, I sat outside of his stall and watched him for 4 hours to obtain my sample. He was dropped and acted like he was thinking about peeing several times before he did… maybe he was just bashful, I don’t know. Color and smell were normal. I feel extremely lucky that I noticed the discharge — or whatever it was — when I did! I haven’t seen anything like that since then, but he also hasn’t been sedated (or standing on the crossties for an hour).
