Any idea where to find a welsh cob or similar safe driving/riding large pony? I’m having no luck with all my normal searches.
I have been looking for a small driving pony and I can’t find one of those, either!
Would a small Morgan work for you? Lots of Morgans are trained to both ride and drive.
Try posting on the “Driving Ponies” Facebook group. I have a Cob I want to drive but just haven’t gotten around to working with him. My son’s Horse activities take up most of my little free time.
When I was pony hunting, I posted an ISO with my parameters on the Welsh Ponies and Cobs fb group, as well as on the CD-L fb page and several driving ponies/horses fb pages.
I found a lot of prospects that way. Then I ended up falling for a pony who was taller and younger than I thought I needed, the wrong color, and the wrong sex besides.
As it happens, he’s absolutely perfect and I adore him, even if he is impossible to keep clean.
You’re scaring me. I’m going to be pony hunting in a few months. I want the perfect, quiet, already trained but without one foot in the grave, pony to be just down the street from me when I go looking.

I have posted iSO on every Facebook driving site I know of. I’m not getting any responses of anything trained to drive and ride that is safe. After my carriage accident, I can’t take another chance. My instructor says it’s very very hard to find what i’m looking for. There is a carriage show held in conjunction with the Welsh Pony Society in October that I plan on going to, where I will stalk any Welsh pony owners, ðŸ˜
Twisting, I am even willing to travel and spend more money to get what I want and need. Still nothing.☹ï¸
Have you tried the Craigslist crapshoot in other States?
I have seen Haflingers for sale and some large pony mixed breeds on the Phoenix Craigslist that meet the criteria.
Have also seen some driving ponies now and again in East Texas and in Colorado. My advice would be to check the bigger cities all over, you will find what you are looking for.
I mean, I find what I should NOT be looking for all the time, all over the place. :rolleyes: I have a pony weakness.
@mimiwenk, what do you consider “safe?” I’m concerned that you won’t find it if it doesn’t exist. I understand your concerns due to your wreck, but as we’ve talked about on other threads, there is no horse that can be guaranteed never to do something dangerous.

Where are you located - general area of the country? Do you want to do pleasure shows? Drive around your neighborhood? CDE?
Part of the problem is that people don’t often put their perfect driving ponies up for sale.

Are you working with a trainer?
Do you have friends with experience driving?
Either would be a good resource for finding you a pony.
No trainers are available to me locally, but members of my Driving Club have many years of experience & I would trust their judgement if I was looking.

A well-trained, dependable pony can provide decades of use.
Try the various carriage clubs. Most have classified ads sections on their website. Texas has four clubs. Think Colorado has two. Bet there are a lot more in the eastern and northern states. They may or may not let non-members into that
section…think one club here did and the other didn’t.

and a character…a gypsy. Gets lot of oh and ahs. Drove his first marathon course recently and ate it up. Likes doing cones and obstacles. And can do a big city lights parade like an old hand…well he is, been doing the light parade since a weanling and his mamma led him with the gypsy section.
There is a Section D cross I saw on the Oregon Welsh Ponies fb page*–he is larger than you have in mind, and around 5, but he is in training with Megan Sibiga, who puts a really good, solid, rational start on horses and turns out animals who think their way through problems instead of panicking. He is pretty cute if you don’t mind hair.

This one sold more or less immediately. Everyone in the Northeast who wanted a solid citizen for driving heard about him, it seems. It’s really too bad that university decided to discontinue its driving program – people want what they had!
