Is there any benefit to upgrading the sliding windows to dropdown windows in the two escape doors of a 2 horse bumper pull straight load trailer? At first I thought I would, but now I wondering if there would be any benefit? The trailer would not be able to be driven that way as there would be no screens and things can fly in and hit the horses eyes. When I park at shows I open the escape doors. So unless I am parked and keep the doors closed and drop the windows there is no benefit. Or am I missing something?
TIA
Drop down windows normally allow more air flow. if you are concerned about bugs and debris flying in then you can easily add screens to the windows.
my personal trailer (slant load) has drop downs on rump and head side and i have not had any problems. i haven’t added screens because i haven’t felt like i need them.
In a sliding window the window has to slide somewhere, so generally one half slides over meaning it can only ever be half open. A drop down of them same size (and it’s probably bigger anyway) would have an opening twice as big.
They are also quicker to open an close than sliders.
But I’d want some windows at the front of the trailer with screens on them so they are open while driving.
I love my 2 horse straight load with the drop down windows. My horses stay so much cooler, particularly when we are in traffic. I have window bars and screens, so I don’t worry about debris coming in.
I had a 2001 similar model trailer without the drop down windows prior to this new trailer. The drop down windows are a big improvement. I didn’t use the drop down windows on a 10 minute trip a few weeks ago. Even though my regular windows were open, my horse was covered in sweat.
Saw this tip somewhere: If you don’t have screens try using a fly mask, or one of the Cashel riding masks. I haven’t hauled my horse in a long time, but the b/o has a 6 horse stock trailer now, and I do plan to mask him if we go anywhere.
Those bus windows are close to useless in my opinion. What I have is drop down windows on both sides, jail bars, and fly mask on horse when travel.
The drop down windows definitely allow for more airflow. Mine had three pieces, a drop window, then a drop screen, then the jail bars. I didn’t have front escape doors. Mine was a pass-through to the tack room. For me, the drop downs were handy at shows and rest stops, you could load up the mangers from the outside, and the horses stayed nice and cool.
My current trailer has the front doors with little bus windows. It also has big roof vents and the back door is a ramp with two little doors on top. I normally travel with those open, and the bus windows and vents open. I close the back doors if I’m travelling a long distance or on a busy highway…but my miles lately are just on local country roads. I have not had an issue with airflow, but I do live in Canada. It’s not as hot and humid here as in many places. When I arrive at stops or shows, I open the doors.
I wouldn’t say I preferred one over the other. The drop down windows also let in more light, but I haven’t had a concern with my current trailer being “too dark” or anything.
Thank you for all the replies. This trailer has three windows down each side (and the ones in the front V and bulkhead and rear ones above the ramp). The 3 on the sides are one in the escape door, and the longer bus window towards the rear , but then it has an additional 3rd window between the rear longer bus window and the escape door. The middle window is the same size as the window in the escape door, so for the extra air flow I think I will order the middle windows as drop downs , more air and behind their eyes away from debris flying in and then at shows it can be left in the drop down position as well as having the doors open for lots of air.
