Has anyone had experience with the rigging on saddles like this?
I’m shopping saddles and some of them have rigging like this. I think it looks messy but does it have any benefits? With the rigging that far forward would I need a rear cinch?

I’ve never heard it called dropped. Double rigging is what I’m familiar with. I got familiar with it with my last saddle, I really like it. My new saddle has the same type but my back ring is angled. I LOVE this type of rigging for my TWH. Keeps the girth back just a bit and just keeps his saddle super secure. I imagine horse’s body type has a lot to do with whether this type works for you or not. My horse has really big shoulders, round barreled back but does have a bit of a wither. I have a pic in the Circle Y post below but will put it here, flaps are’t lifted but you can see a bit of the rigging.

I have a somewhat similar saddle - the front ring is higher but it’s still intended for “V rigging” or “3 point rigging” in addition to being called “Dropped Rigging”.
Using only the front rigging lets the forks jam on top of the shoulders, which will make the horse’s shoulders sore and often cause problems with either trotting or gaited horses (trotting horses still trot, but not as well; gaited horses may change their entire gait.)
Using the rear D in addition to the front helps to keep some weight in the back of the saddle as well. One thing to consider with any saddle is that the tree does not extend beyond the weight-bearing ribs, or you’ll make their loin sore.
![]( like saddle with a back cinch and close contact. I trail ride in mountains, but don’t do competitive riding, this my saddle is designed to be comfortable for the horse and me, and able to carry saddle bags, slicker and pommel bags
Thew back cinch (done up ) stabilizes a saddle, and thus prevents any back and forth motion over the loins, which will sore a horse over long rides
Mine happens to be a balance ride saddle, that I have had for thirty years, ridden countless different horse with, but on a daily training basis and on long mountain rides
