When a drug has a 12 hour withdrawal period, does that mean I must have the horse off the drug 12 hours before the competition start date, i.e. a 3 day show from October 1-3 we must stop the drug by noon on September 30th or does it mean 12 hours before my ride time (so if I’m in the ring at 8am, I’m fine as long as I give my dose by 8 pm?)
The “withdrawal period” is based on an average effect on an average horse. Most horses are not average.
I think “12 hour withdrawal period” means you should withdraw the drug at least 12 hours before testing. A horse can be tested at any time on the grounds, though it is often tested right after a performance.
And that is an average, each horse is an individual, and the drug may be testable much longer than the “average” horse.
According to the rulebook (GR408) all questions about drugs and medications should be addressed to the Federation Equine Drugs and Medications Program (800) 633-2472, (614) 299-7707, FAX (614) 299-7706
I was told at least 12 hours from scheduled ride time when I asked.
