Dry skin on my cat

Recently our big male cat has had super dry skin. He’s black, so it’s easy to see, but there are just lots of flakes in his fur. He’s about 10 years old and we’ve had him since he was 3 months old and we’ve never had this problem with him before. He doesn’t seem bothered by it (he’s not super itchy or anything), but if you scratch his back, he pushes into your hand so you’ll do it harder. He eats Purina Feline UR food (as he has for years since he’s prone to UTI’s). Any suggestions of something we could give him to help? (Or should we just not worry about it since it doesn’t seem to be bothering him that much)

You can buy fish oil supplements at your local pet store that might help. Do you feed high quality grain free wet food? That is also helpful to maintaining all round health including good skin.

On Yankee Jungle (tv show) they rubbed coconut oil on the really dry spots for one of their primates. That might be something you could look in to. My dogs get some coconut oil to eat with dinner so I know it is safe for them in small quantities. One of mine has allergies and thus dry and irritated skin. It seems to help. I would check with a vet before using it topically or feeding, but I love it.
