I think my kit comes tomorrow or Thursday. Then it takes several weeks. So I think once it draws close we should make a guess what thread.
A friend ended up with a brindle stray down south that was guessed to be a catahoula cattle dog. Wonderful dog
Love Catahoulas!
Yes, that could be the missing
breed??
Might explain both the brindle
and the golden/amber eyes.
And another interesting tidbit-
If you read about the history
of catahoulas, one of the original breeds used was GREYHOUND.
Also many purpose bred Catahoula mixes here in the South. They sound like a wonderful dog.
Now that is interesting !!
In reading about purpose bred
Cat/Lab mixes, I can understand the appeal.
… Smart, easily trained, sociable,
athletic, loyal, obedient.
What’s not to love?
She was one of those once in a lifetime dogs. <3 (and she had white paws)
Of course–now that I actually looked them up I see brindle is not a likely color for a catahoula dog…oops!
My brother’s dig is great dane x catahoula. He is piebald!
I had an amazing Catahoula years ago. Big, stoic, a pretty grey/black Merley looking boy. His name was Blue. His Mother was a black and white piebald with ice blue eyes. He had the same amber golden eyes like Tiger.
Tiger continues to THRIVE! This whole arrangement has been a little exhausting. Every morning before work, my friend drops him off at my barn. So I get up at 5:20 AM to make sure I’m out there by six. And then he plays and plays and plays until I drive him home to his house every afternoon at three. I still am not comfortable having him full-time at my house because of my old dog The old dog accepts him …albeit begrudgingly. I wish the timing was better, but I just cannot displace my old dog. He’s 14. And sadly, slowly… entering his final chapter.
Anyway! Tiger has seemed to not be at all aggressive to horses through the fence line. So today with my barn dogs loose in the barnyard along with tiger, I groomed my horse, tacked him up and rode in the field. Tiger just rolled over and took a nap. When I returned from my ride back into the barnyard, he initially approached, but I told him to stop and stay away from the horse. He cocked his head and obliged. I was very proud of him. He’s going to make a good barn dog.
Although he thinks it’s great fun to nibble hay!
And I can’t remember who said Tiger would likely become Tigger. You were absolutely right. I keep calling him that. And he responds to it. lol
@omare, my brindle Catahoula is snoring next to me as I type. Most people are familiar with the leopard pattern, and the merle, but they come in brindle, solid yellow, red, black, black and tan and so on. Our current dog has Tiger’s amber eye color.
We’ve had three Catahoulas. They are marvelous.
Tiger is not a full bred Catahoula, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a dash of the breed in there.
Thanks, that is good to know-- (Those “internet experts” do need to be taken with a grain of salt) My friend’s South Carolina born brindle girl was confirmed as that breed --she was such a delight, I always perk up when I see a similar type. She was a very smart girl and finally passed of old age after a well lived life.
I said way up there that I thought he was Catahoula and pitty and I’m sticking with it
Indeed you did! Embark comes today. I can’t wait to see the results (:
That’s what I was thinking, a catahoula/pit cross. If you’re in Florida they’re a very common cross (and often found as strays because people take them hog hunting and then lose them a lot).
We had a LOT of catahoulas (20 at one point) because we bred them and had cattle. They make very good cow dogs for Florida cattle, which are typically quite wild and found in dense brush. You need a tough dog to work them.
We had many merles, but also quite a few brindles.
Wow that’s very cool! I did the Embark test yesterday and mailed it off. So I will update with results in a couple of weeks. I really adored the one Catahoula I owned. He was smart, loyal, and obviously a working dog… But not so prey driven like the bully breeds I’ve owned. It was more like he just wanted a job.
Tiger has not peed in his crate for weeks, and he continues to settle in. But he is completely a puppy. And wants to chew chew chew through leashes if he finds them, two harnesses… an unplugged extension cord…. Sigh. You really do forget this stage
First of all we really do need a dogs in sweaters thread and second of all I want to let you know I think it’s awesome you are putting your old guys comfort at the forefront. I have seen too many people who totally discard how the pet in the house ( especially an older pet ) feels and then wonder why the dogs don’t get along . You are doing an amazing job at setting up everyone for success and it’s so nice to see. This has become one of my favorite threads and I wish you and your dogs continued success!
I love when the old dogs are comfortable with the newbies and can teach them the ways. We’ve always overlapped dogs and done really well with it. It’s amazing what a support the oldsters can be for the youngsters as long as everyone’s boundaries are enforced, by someone.
