He is so in  with my friend. When he leaves his presence he cries and cries. How do you teach a dog confidence? Just by showing up again? Repetition? I have a feeling he was a very lonely puppy growing up.

Well, he was abandoned. That’s got to do something to his belief that someone will come back to him. :disappointed_relieved:

Very true. He was SO hungry. And mostly THIRSTY. I cannot imagine feeling so anxious about water. He still tries to cover his water bowl with a blanket after he’s drank his fill. Like he’s hiding something very very precious.

Can you put several water bowls in different places he goes by or stays in for any length of time?
Later phase some out?

Oh my gosh, there’s definitely some kind of hound in him based on his roo roos.

No not until he’s off crate confinement during the day. Would make a horrible mess. We make sure has a long drink before being locked up. When he wakes up and then after his morning poo and pee. Then he’s got the bowl he covers while he has to stay in the crate. I drive out there every afternoon by 2 to let him out and wait for my friend to come home at 3:30 to bring him to my barn. It’s a group effort ! I’ve thought about a large rabbit type waterer. He could lick.
Anyway honestly he’s a thousand times better off than he was.

When I say he was so thirsty I mean when he was running wild in a huge nature preserve. Not now
He spent 3 long weeks on the lam without sustenance or proper water. So he wants to hide his resources

He’s adorable. I just know my dog would be his BFF.

Seems that Pippet is the adopted term. Mine is supposedly a Whipador (whippet x lab). Crazy crossbred mutt names :woman_shrugging:

I get total Catahoula/pittie cross vibes from him, the sweet silly talking is par for the course. He’s so sweet and fun, so many happy vibes! He’s no dummy either if he’s trying to protect his water, that’s a cool aspect of his personality that comes from a bad time.

I have a rescue reactive type over thinker and I use a good harness on him or a choke chain, which I don’t ever actually choke him but sometimes we need a real “I have you”. My dog would also love this dog lol

The most important thing to do when dealing with dogs with separation anxiety is to completely suppress both arrival and departure attention and emotion toward them. So when you’re getting ready to leave, you start ignoring the dog. Don’t say goodbye, don’t make a fuss, and definitely don’t project any emotion that tells him your disappearance is going to be a big deal, like “Oooh, puppy, I’m so sorry I’m leaving. I know you’re so sad, but I’ll be home soon” etc.

Same with arrivals. Don’t fuss over the dog as soon as you walk in. Ignore them till you’ve gotten settled, then treat them like you never left. Again, no emotion that gets him all excited. You want him to consider these times alone as no big deal and making a fuss about it just convinces him that there’s really something to worry about.

Dong this consistently for a couple of weeks will eliminate (or at least greatly reduce) the dog’s anxiety. There’s always a few that end up needing some chemical help, but this method has worked for me for every shelter dog I’ve ever adopted (7 so far).

And @ThreeWishes to make it happen for this very lucky dog.

That harness came today and it worked like a charm! Thank you for the recommendation.

My GSD had this in his crate when he was locked in for hours with his previous owner. I can’t believe he was able to drink from it but it worked!

My dogs are trying to teach Tiger how to be a good barn boy.

This position appears to be his default mode.
He’s dead asleep lol

He’s so happy to spend the entire day with his freedom in the barnyard with the other dogs. He’s still limping left front. I noticed that at the ankle his leg turns out a lot there. But there’s no swelling or lacerations or obvious injury when you palpate it. Maybe it’s coming from his shoulder. He does seem to have more musculature there. Part of me wonders if he was hit by a car when he was running free or had an injured ankle as a young puppy. I’ve shortened his nails and the pads of his feet look pristine I’ll ask for an x-ray on the 29th He never wants to completely stand straight on his left leg. He always ever so slightly bends his ankle ? Dog fetlock ? I’m much better versed at horses than dog lameness. Good thing is he does not appear to be in pain in anyway it doesn’t limit him, and when you touch him from shoulder to toes, he just looks at you calmly.
