Dunabeck Horse Trials

This popped up on my FB page, Dunabeck horse trials is struggling to find entries this year, I think its related to the horrific spring we had this year, several of my other local shows cancelled this spring, and then struggled to find enough entries when it finally dried out, and many XC courses just had their first open schooling in August.

Dunabeck was forced to cancel last year, and received quite a bit of backlash, even though their fields had standing water.

I think the AECs are also taking it’s toll on this event - they are the weekend before and very resonable driving distance for most in this area, it’s fairly easy to qualify in this area of the country (I’ve qualified every year since I started eventing in 2010 - I can guarentee you that would not be the case if I lived in Area II) very unfortunate timing for a great family-ran event that was already struggling for entries :frowning:
I will be there, so if anyone ends up coming on their own please stable with me - it will be a super fun weekend!

My family was so excited about going last year and entered 2 horses. Per their FB page, at first it seemed like they might reschedule but that didn’t happen and we lost all our money. We were offered a future XC schooling, but live 6 hours away. We understood that the weather was horrible, but I believe it was also cancelled in 2016, and I saw an old Chronicle post that said full refunds were given that time (not sure if this was true). In any case, we can’t afford to enter an event that seems to have a much higher possibility of cancellation, and that won’t run dressage and stadium at least, like Silverwood will, or the KY Horse Park that runs XC in all weather. If they had refunded at least some of the money, we might have tried one more time.

I think 3 years ago, they cancelled 3 weeks out. When it gets closer, they have a lot of non-refundable money they have paid out to judges and course designers. Most do not refund money for a cancelled event. It’s hard when you have entered 2 horses. I don’t agree with a venue running CC no matter what. Our local venue cancelled CC the day of so it was basically a schooling CT. In all honesty, I would not want a 6 hour drive for a schooling CT. Cancel. It does save me at least gas and hotel (always get a refundable hotel if you cancel).

I don’t think that any venue runs a CT no matter what, especially if stadium or dressage is on grass.

I hope you understand that so close to the date of a show a venue has already blown their money on judges and ribbons. Forcing venues to take even more of a less means fewer venues.

Unfortunately they only had 39 entries as of closing date (yesterday), obviously they can’t afford to run an event with so few entries and they had to cancel (with full refunds). Very disappointed to see the sport fading out in this area of the country to the point we can’t support the few events we have left.
