Looking for tales of saddle dying. Was it successful? Not so much? Am considering buying a very well used but still totally comfy (for both me and the princess) and structurally sound saddle. Leather is both smooth and Buffalo. Store has offered to dye it for me gratis. Also, any transfers of dye to breeches? Am assuming that will happen for a short time at least.
have never seen one where I knew it was redyed that didn’t look like the leather was killed.
Yup. I died a light brown jump saddle that I hated. Managed to make it more Havana in colour. No problems with transfer but I did make sure to apply very light coats. Allow to dry thoroughly and then make sure to seal in with good conditioner. Wear black breaches the first couple of rides.
This is the best how-to I have seen. And the results are great!! https://the900facebookpony.com/2015/11/19/diy-dyeing-a-saddle/
I have used “Leather Refinish” products with excellent results.
I have seen okay and disastrous results.
I redyed a hennig and it came out just fine, no leaking and looked like new. It was one of the ones that faded to a green-gray color. Redyed it black and it came out just fine.
I dyed a brown flat saddle black. Looked great, lasted for years. No rub off --the facebook page is excellent! FYI I dyed 10 pair (over 10 years) of western boots to match various colored Showmanship outfits --no problems with any. Do follow all the steps!
I’ve redyed my saddle with great results. I used a high-end shoe product.
I dyed all my leather black and it was very successful! No dye rubbed off after I let the topcoat dry. I dyed my bridle, saddle, and breastplate. My saddle is a 40 year old Stubben and still looked great after dyeing. Best of luck.
