Dying Kastel sunshirts - before and after - UPDATED 7/6 with experiment results!

Tried this today! I took my faded, light pink sunshirt and turned it a nice medium purple. I think I left it on the stove for about 45 minutes and used the whole thing of dye. The stitching did not dye, but it looks fine as is! Thanks for the inspiration.

Post pics! :slight_smile: The stitching on mine so far have dyed but the zipper doesn’t… very odd.

I turned my gross faded yellow one into a gorgeous merlot using Jacquard Acid Dye. They have more colors to choose from and I think they work a bit better/faster (although you do have to add a bit of vinegar). I also tossed a pair of old gray tights into the dye water after I was done with the shirt and they came out a really lovely deep eggplant.

I am guessing it depends on what the zipper or thread is made from and the percentage of each material- poly, cotton etc…

Now I’m thinking about whether the clearance white Struck breeches would take to being dyed… I wonder if the coating on the fabric to keep it stain and fade resistant would also make it dye resistant. … Because I could justify splurging on them if I could dye them to something other than white!

Hopefully these upload! The pink was before, purple is after!

You could try reaching out to their team and asking what the fabric is treated with. I actually have 3 pairs of those and would love to dye one of them if works!

We have dyed FITS breeches… definitely find out the fiber content and see what your options are!

Well I just washed a very light blue Kastel shirt after wearing it just the 2nd time ever but my pigpen self seems to have stained it permanently so I may have to take the plunge!

I have dyed white tailoreds, B Vertigo and Le Fash breeches. In my experience, everything has come out lighter. I think I might re-dye the B vertigo as I don’t like the color that came out. I used the RIT dye for synthetic fabrics, can get it at Walmart.

I will be dying a red Animo jacket here soon. Red is a no-no in America so it’ll be a fun adventure.

@MsRidiculous - I love the color!

@Jo - What a great idea!

Definitely keep us posted if you do this! I am wondering the same thing!

Wait, that strong pink or red collar lining changed to light blue? Really?

It’s sort of a light purple, but yes, it was pink and now is not pink. If you look through the replies, I also posed a neon coral shirt that went to a spring green color.

The zippers also don’t take the dye, so you can see the original color on the zipper fabric.

@add leg - How did you do the ombre? It looks great! I’ve ordered dye and am planning to give this a go next weekend.

What brand/style of dye did you use for the FITS? If I’m correct, those are nylon/poly, right? How was the colourfastness after a couple washes?

It was a hundred years ago but I’m almost certain we used the regular RIT dye because we didn’t know any better. No issues at all with colorfastness. They are still the same color they were as the day they were dyed. The full seat didn’t take the color nearly as well as the fabric, but that’s to be expected. Knowing what I know now, we probably needed a more specialized dye.

Wow would love to try this with some light colored tights that I have. I wonder if the hot water would mess up the silicone on the seat? Or maybe I could just try warm water?

$900FB pony posted on her blog that she did some tights - I’d check that out.

How did that go? I have a bunch of white FITS that are too darned stained up to be show breeches any more but I don’t wearing them for schooling because … white. Did the leather dye at all? What dye brand did you use?
