Dying Kastel sunshirts - before and after - UPDATED 7/6 with experiment results!

Now that I’ve dyed like half of what’s in my closet, I started playing around with techniques. You can’t really tie-dye these shirts, but I was trying to get something sort of tie-dye esque. Figured if that failed I’d just do an ombre, which was my original plan before I went off script and started playing around. But I really like the cool, sort of stone-washed look that I got! I’m gonna keep it like this.

I also dyed another pair of tights - they were kind of a lighter/brighter navy that I didn’t really love, so I dyed them to a deep dark navy.

Someone needs to stop me, I’m out of control.

I’ve done 3 different brands now (For Horses, Ariat, Kerrits) and it hasn’t messed with the silicone on any of them.

So is everyone using RIT for Synthetics? Most of my REI “technical” shirts are synthetic. And are you doing it in a cooking pot on the stove, or did you invest is something that can be ruined. I mean, do I want to use my good big pasta pot for this?

I used RIT for the first one and wasn’t super impressed. I’ve used Jacquard Acid Dye for all the rest.

I have used RIT for all of mine. I’ve used a stainless pasta type pot for all of them and it washes out perfectly fine, as it did with my spoon rest.

ETA: It does say to use a stainless steel pot so I do not use my non-stick Calphalon type pots.

When I started to dye things, I bought a big old cooking pot from Goodwill just for this purpose.

Well I finally did mine, I had some light blue tights that I wanted to make navy, but they really came out more like bright royal 🙁 I used Rit for synthetics, navy, used the whole bottle and soaked for 45 min. Maybe I will re-dye them with the Jacquard.

I tried white cotton breeches (4% spandex I think) with the all-purpose RIT in dark green, and it is pretty splotchy and much lighter than I expected  I’ll try again, don’t have much to lose at this point.
