I had the pleasure of seeing Dynaformer in “person” earlier this week. I am curious about his racing record and what makes him such a desirable stallion, given his not-so-desirable temperament.
What do you think made the Jacksons select him as a match for La Ville Rouge the first time - his size?
Did he race as a 3-year-old? Did his temperament impact his racing at all?

Yes, he is a big boy. It was so great to see all the stalions at TC - the staff was so nice also.
One thing that makes him so popular is that he is a 100% outcross for the Mr. Ps and Northern Dancers and Native Dancers. Given that La Ville Rouge is sireline Mr. P, with Neartic in his dam line, the outcross would be a good thing, but it would definitely concentrate the Nasrullah/Royal Charger blood.
As to his temperament, many of the Hail To Reason sires were afflicted with the meanies. But the life a TB breeding stallion is very unnatural, and added to all the testosterone, might have a lot to do with their relations with humans. If you look at Dynaformer’s pedigree, he has Hail To Reason (progenitor of difficult), Ribot (difficult), and Nasrullah (difficult), all close up. So, even if Roberto, his immediate sire, didn’t have a well deserved reputation for producing very difficult sire sons, Dynaformer had enough bad guys to explain his own temperament as a standing stud.

Why do you think he has a not-so-desirable temperment?
I’ve been around the horse and have bred many mares to him through the farms I’ve worked for, and never witnessed any unusually ill or common behavior. He’s just a TB stallion. As far as I know, he hasn’t bitten off anyone’s thumb and he doesn’t wear a muzzle, I don’t recall they leave a chain on him, so by my standards he’s fine.
Las Olas – For some reason I do remember visiting Dynaformer years ago and being told he’d been excused from the daily galloping routine precisely because he had bitten a finger off his groom! If I’m wrong, someone please correct me – but this is my recollection!
Absolutely an impressive stallion and I would say his offspring have more than proven him in the sire ranks!
Dynaformer has a reputation as a nasty stallion but he sires very good runners and in racing, that counts more than temperament. (On the show horse side since most horses end up with ammy’s, breeding for pleasant disposition is far more important.) Dynaformer is an outcross to many of the most fashionable bloodlines and generally throws some size and route ability. I’ve met very mean Dynaformers and some that were like kittens.

Well, so he does! I just looked through pictures I’ve had of him over the years and he’s not wearing one. I have a great one of him flogging himself with a traffic cone, tho. I wonder if he is getting worse with age.
B&B - I have a friend who works there. Next time I see her, I’ll ask. Usually, those of us that work at the stud farms hear about the finger biters, but I may have missed that one. Everytime I’ve been there to see him (and watch him cover mares) he’s been fine.

This would be true.
When I was there, I was told he required two grooms at all times.

You’re right, he was to dangerous to put the bridle on so they quit riding him. Over at another forum there’s a poster that used to ride him at 3C.

I look at it this way–Fair Play was a rank SOB, and his sire Hastings was as close to a sociopath as horses get while still being useable, and they produced Man o’ War (obviously that Mahuba-Rock Sand influence did SOMETHING.)
Barbaro’s freak accident aside, Dynaformer’s got good blood and he sires pretty sound horses.
No matter what Drvm says, you have to admit that he is one of the most successful chasing sires in America, and that counts for a lot with me. He gets stamina and jumping ability and toughness when it counts.
When I was there for the yearling sales I was told he had recently (again) removed someones digits. I did get to go play with one of his sons Purim. Totally different personality. Very easy going and friendly and much prettier to look at than dynaformer.
