E.H. Herzensdieb offspring

Hi everyone,

I am considering a filly out of Herzensdieb, and I was wondering what sort of temperament is typical of his offspring? I had read in another thread that either he or his offspring (can’t remember which or maybe even both!) tend to be on the spicier side, but it was unclear what that actually meant. Any luck with them being AA friendly? I actually prefer a more forward, sensitive ride but I don’t like horses that are reactive, explosive or prone to shenanigans. Any insight would be really appreciated. Thanks so much!

I’m breeding to him this year as well so following this thread. However my mare is by His Highness so not worried about temperament.

I’d seen posts about his offspring having good temperaments . Now I have a coming 2 yr old and 1 yr old by him that so far do have good dispositions. Definitely are pretty calm at pasture and just handling a little.

I have a friend that has a Herzensdieb mare that is doing LL eventing. N=1 but I really like the mare. She is smart, athletic, and has a little spice while still being AA (in my AA opinion). She is not a deadhead under saddle, but is also the kind of ride where friend puts anyone on her, including her teen daughter that is not a strong rider, and the mare is very careful with her on XC. It is wonderful to watch.

He is a very nice stallion, himself. I have not heard of him producing hotter horses… but he is a Trakehner, and there is a stigma (that I have not found to be true) that Trakehners are hot by comparison to other WB registries…

Beowulf I am so glad that you said that you haven’t found that old wive’s tale to be true! LOL  I personally think you can’t go wrong with Herzensdieb - the owner and stallion station cannot be nicer to deal with, the horse himself is beyond proven and has a pedigree to die for and is proven and his offspring are proven. You don’t get to be an Elite Hengst for nothing

It surprises me that it’s still being circulated today. Especially when we have such prominent WBs that are very spicy and popular in breeding, like Krack C, Jazz, Sandro Hit to name a few off of the top of my head – so when I hear someone say they’ve heard TKs are hot, it makes me think “compared to what?” A loaf of bread?

Lots of WB stallions are not amateur friendly. Most TK stallions are amateur friendly (at least in my experience, as a floppy amateur). Where is the misconception coming from, maybe old impressions of the breed?

The thing I like most about TKs, and it is also something present in AAs and TBs, is that there is rarely a bottom to these horses. They generally as a rule are very giving, willing, and honest rides.

Best description ever :). And no idea where it came from. Honestly I rarely hear it anymore and anyone that knows me and meets my horses or friend’s horses they don’t think it anymore lol

I have crept all corners of the internet and have pretty much only found positive points on his offspring (I spent probably too much time looking!). I am breeding the super TK mare I have in my program to him–Dr. Schmidt was very kind in answering all my questions, and they came highly recommended for customer service.

She was very honest discussing all the stallions–if I was looking at a foal by him, I’d call her

Also, seconding comments on the attitude of the Trakehner’s I’ve dealt with–I breed my hot and opinionated mare to @acottongim’s stallion and the foals have been delightful, maybe a bit sensitive, but very reasonable, smart, and brave! I bred my TB mare to Ehrentanz KD, and that foal was a doll, and now we have added a TK mare by Windfall to our program, she was plenty forward on XC with her owner, but within a month of getting to our farm, we started using her for pony rides. I guess a person could say I’m becoming a fan!

I have a coming yearling ET filly out of a PSG TB mare. The filly was tied for 2cd in the US on the Old NA tour last year. She is smart, and very self possessed. Very sure of herself and her place in the world which is just like her biological dam. Not going to be the biggest horse, but seems like she will be a partner with you.
