Ear bonnet sizes

I ride at a large barn with a lot of different lesson horses and am thinking about buying an ear bonnet to match my saddle pads. I would say that the majority of the horses I ride would fit in the cob size, but my favorite horse is a big 16.2hh Hanoverian mare. She also has a relatively large head and tall ears. I can only get one right now, so I am wondering whether I should get the cob size and try to make it work for her or get a larger size and have one that’s a little big on the rest of them. I could also use the bonnet just when I’m riding her and not with the others. If I decide to do that, what would be the best size for her? The one I am considering comes in Cob and Full.

Definitely get the full — the cob likely won’t stay on her if its too small, whereas it being slightly too big on the others won’t be a problem.

What job do you want the ear bonnet to do?

Honestly I just think it would look cute with my saddle pad and polos no specific reason lol

Not all horses like ear bonnets. If they aren’t needed for flies or muffling sound, they are pretty pointless. Also, why polo wraps? There might be some use to sport boots, but I didn’t think people jumped in polos.

I get wanting to buy horsey stuff when you don’t have your own horse, and it’s kind of limited. But honestly if you are at all short on funds, the ear bonnet and matching polos trend is just wasted money.

We are required to use polos where I ride and we do jump in them. And I have seen pretty much all of the lesson horses ridden in bonnets at some point or other.

I’ve owned and shown hunters for 30 years and we’ve almost always jumped in polos. It’s very common.

Ah, OK. I guess it’s eventers that don’t use polos. All the jumpers I’ve seen use boots if anything and dressage will school on polos but of course do not compete in them.

Back in the dark ages when I was a lesson student at a hunter barn, most of the lesson horses went in polo wraps. That is where I learned to put on polo wraps. They offered a mini-clinic in wrapping once you got to a certain point as a lesson student.

I think having matching stuff is fun for most people and if having polo wraps and ear bonnets are probably one of the cheaper ways of doing it if you are a lesson person.
