I started using a noise reducing bonnet on my mare earlier this year and I swear she is a changed horse. Her tendency to look for distractions to randomly spook at practically disappeared. Maybe she just decided to finally become a proper adult when she turned 15 but… I don’t always use it at home, but I have used it at our last few shows and the difference in her has been amazing!

That is Louie too. He can be very A.D.D😂. He only 7 years old so he has a few more years before he’s fully mature. My last OTTB finally grew up around 18🤦🏼♀️

These work great, I have one. Cashel Quiet Ride Armor or something like that. When the big B-52s are in full force, I use it. They CAN bite through, but it gives me a minute to help the horse out and swat that sucker off.

i’ve been tempted to try a fly sheet, but it’s so humid here and there’s often zero breeze. So, it’d probably just overheat them at worst or just stick right to their body at best.
Just a word of warning - I purchased and used a noise cancelling bonnet. Had my young horse wearing it at his first show - and I believe it helped him. Than he shook his head really hard and the whole bridle came off - ACK! I believe the heaviness of the ears and the violent shaking just lifted the crownpiece right over his little ears. All ended well but I was trying very hard to put his bridle back on and not panic. A spectator came over to assist. (we were out of the ring and I was leading him back to our stall)
This is a common problem (search COTH). I had it happen to me 4 times. He just shakes at a fly! Once a rider was on him. Luckily no one got hurt when he took off across the show grounds. I solved the problem by NOT tucking the back of the bonnet under the bridle - just the front under the browband and the sides under the bridle. Now, when he shakes his head, just the bonnet comes off. Not a perfect solution but better than the alternative.

I got a Voltaire hat from the rep as a result of that thread. It was epic. Also, the hat was great and I wore it to death.
