Ear covers for dogs?

Help me out, please. If this has been discussed or not, my searching skills are poor. It is the 4th of July again. I have one dog-shepard/rhodesian ridgeback cross from the shelter that is pyscho about any booming noises. We have tried sedation but with her we get a paradoxical effect. I have a thundershirt that she loves and it works great in thunderstorms. But now that I live in Nebraska, even in Lincoln, the neighbors are trying to outdo themselves with the fireworks. I have at least 4 groups within a 10 block area that challenge each other. We can expect a solid 48 hours of fireworks. It is way too much for the old girl. Last night, she stuck her head between my legs as I was standing and seemed to like a gentle pressure over her ears.

So my question is this-has anyone tried an ear cover like the showjumpers or dressage horses use to calm their dogs or block noise? I know that there are some for protecting from burrs etc. So what do you all think? It wouldn’t help for this year but may be next.

I don’t think that any type of ear cover would work very well - I think you’d need to use something like a pom pom (same as horse) but I would be shocked if any dog would keep them in. The snoods or covers you see some dogs wearing (honestly I’ve only ever seen them on show dogs) aren’t very thick and dogs can still hear. I doubt it would be enough to make a big difference in their hearing.

But, they are cheap and who knows, maybe even just a little muffling could make a difference, especially if you paired it with a white noise machine or something.

Mutt muffs! http://www.safeandsoundpets.com/index.html hearing protection for dogs. Too late for today but perhaps for next year. I am very sorry for your dog today :frowning:

You could try cutting the toe off a sock, putting cotton balls in the ears, then pulling the sock over the head so it holds the ears down.
I do something similar in my dog grooming to cut noise when using my strong force dryer on dogs. (I use a product called a happy hoodie that helps dry the ears as well as helping to cut noise but same principle.)

This a late reply, but you can try this trick next time-- https://www.thedodo.com/dogs-fireworks-trick-1529471151.html
