Earbud alternative for 2-way radios?

Our hunt requires staff to carry radios. I can’t stand hearing the darn things blasting out loud when we are hunting, so I’ve gone to using an earbud. I stick the radio on my waist under my coat, clip the mike on my lapel, run the wire to the earpiece up under my stock, wrap it around the harness of my helmet (where the harness makes a “Y” shape near my ear), and stick the bud in my ear. This keeps the thing from being lost when it pops out and (mostly) keeps the wire from snagging on heavy brush. It also keeps the radio transmissions from squawking out loud and disturbing game or other riders.

However, the earbud is a bit annoying sitting in my ear, both for comfort and because it somewhat decreases my hearing ability for hounds and horn. What I’d really like is something that I can easily clip or secure to the harness itself rather than stick into my ear … something that leaves my ear and hands free, but lets me hear transmissions easily because it’s located only an inch or so away from my ear (and doesn’t make the transmissions loud enough to be heard a couple feet away). Needs to be something easily attached and detached.

Anyone using something like this or have ideas?

There are options. You need to look at what law enforcement uses. All of it is available to civilians.

Sorry… I guess we are still doing things “the old fashion way” no radios or tracking collars! In a pinch, we have pretty good cell service in most of our territories. We hate all the radio chatter we hear when we attend joint meets and are stubbornly refusing to get radios although some of the staff have asked for them. I have seen a few whippers-in with a radio attached on the lapel of their hunt coat and they try to keep the volume set low. I think it’s just to tempting to call out the blow by blow of where the hounds are heading and where the whips are stationed when you have a radio on your person. I like listening for hounds and trying to figure where I need to go next. Although sometimes I get thrown out with this method.

Personally, I hate the damn things, but it’s not my call. Since I’m stuck with it, I’m looking for a way to make it as functional and unobtrusive as possible.
