Eco-vet fly spray...any thoughts?

Anyone have any experience with this spray? Seems like a new concept. I just ordered some for my sweet itch sufferers. I’ll let you know my thoughts soon

I use it - some people cannot stand the smell. It is pungent.

I think it works well but it is not something you want to douse the horse in - you’ll see when you spray it. I spray it on their fly bonnet and it works great for rides. Not sure it works on no-see-ums but it works great on deerflies.

It’s been around for a few years now…three, maybe? I don’t find it to really work, but others report amazing results. Probably depends on your own fly population. I hear they changed the scent this year to be a little less terrible.

Pay attention to the directions, though. It’s not your typical application.

I absolutely can’t handle the smell. Reminds me of my brother when he was a teenager drenching himself in that Ax body spray:disgust::lol:

That being said, it does sell ok for the company I work for. Not nearly as well as the Farnam or Absorbine sprays, and the people who use it swear by it. I just couldn’t get past the smell. They have changed it, and it is a little less potent than the original formula was but I still can’t!

I tried it last year. I didn’t think it worked that well and the smell made me gag. However, as others have said, there is a new and improved formulation now that is supposed to smell better.

It exacerbated my asthma, of all things. shrug

I think it smells like ivory soap. Works ok

The new smell is better. Still not fabulous, but better. And it still keeps flies away for longer than anything else I’ve used.

Makes me choke, but it works well so I continue to use it. The new scent isn’t any better – to me, it isn’t really that it smells bad, it just makes me choke.

Thanks guys, mine just shipped. I have tried EVERYTHING for my 2 babies that are a huge bloody scab by the end of the summer, even if kept inside. I just started a new chinese herb that seems to be helping but they are still loosing their hair in the usual places, just not as fast. I’m hoping with the use of the 2 (herbs and Ecovet), it will make them more comfortable. I’ll let you know!

It seems to work well here.
I agree the smell is not pleasant but I can live with it if it keeps the bugs off my horse.

Another reminder to read the instructions. You do not have to spray the whole horse.

I tried it for a few weeks in Maryland and haven’t found it to work very well. But honestly I can’t remember if anything I used last year worked very well either. Ugh. The flies are absurd right now!

I thought it worked but felt like I was being poisoned! That smell is horrendous. Haven’t tried the “new smell” yet. Probably won’t. It’s very expensive for a tiny bottle. And I will second reading the directions as it is applied differently.

I am having very much success with fly predators + Solitude feed through. Have minimal flies, sometimes it seems like none! My horses are happy about it.

Keep in mind you’re supposed to use MUCH less. That tiny bottle lasts as long as the bigger Ultrashiel type bottles and in my experience keeps flies away for a lot longer. Not forever, but longer. I usually get about 45 minutes out of a spray.

Do brace yourself for the smell. Actually, it’s not even the smell itself, it’s some underlying compound that makes you choke and cough. Makes the horses cough too. The other day I sprayed it at the far end of the aisle, right by the barn opening, and a few people standing 20 feet away in the tack room started coughing.

That said, it does seem to work, but to me at least, no better than Ultrashield or Endure.

I just saw the ads for it today, but they won’t ship to Canada yet. I am a little weirded out by the fact that it contains tallow though.

Ecovet is the only thing that has worked on my horses to keep those tiny little biting black flies away. Hate those little buggers! They’re the ones that leave the scabs and bloody crusty areas on bellies and ears. Anyway, my big guy is somewhat allergic to them and if he gets a bite anywhere near his eye, it will swell completely closed. I used to have to keep a fly mask on him for just that reason but don’t need to now that I use the Ecovet.

I agree w/ everyone else. It is NASTY stuff while you’re spraying it. It makes me cough, sneeze, makes my nose run, and sometimes I even gag a little. None of my horses object overly much to it but my big guy does clear his nose and even has made a sneezy kind of sound a time or two.

I only spray it on legs, chest, belly, and the bottom of the tail. If there are no black flies, I wipe a little bit on the poll as well. When the black flies are out, I wipe it around the eyes and in and around the ears too. If the really big horse flies are out, I will apply a bit along the topline as well. What I’ve found is that flies and ticks don’t like it at all. Weirdly, mosquitos do not seem to be repelled by it. What works for me is to spray Clac (Also called Deolotion) diluted at the rate of 1 part Clac to 3 parts water, or the SmartPak spray on first. Both of those seem to work pretty well for the mosquitos in my area. Then, I spray the Ecovet over the top to deal with the rest of the bitey summer bugs.

Good luck, OP. I hope you find that it works for you. Just remember that breathing that stuff in is an experience that takes some getting used to. I’ve been using the stuff for three years now and I still choke.

Article in EN praising it

Honestly, I like the stuff. After giving up on all fly sprays, I find this does work better and as for the smell, I just say suck it up - it’s not so bad, not at all.

It is not available in Canada as there are so many regulations to get it approved. I tried to talk my tack shop into geting it and that’s what they said.

Cost-wise, it is on a par, as you don’t use so much.

I think it works a bit better than Ultrashield black for my particular mix of bugs – coastal new england woods. I wear a paper mask when I spray it because even the slightest whiff has me choking on it for minutes. The mask works great.

Mine as well. Literally took my breath away! But my horse seemed fine and it works great in our buggy humid climate!
