I have a precocious critter who could use an edible licky, sticky, or grain balled stall toy. Any suggestions? My lovely gelding’s inner spirit animal is Conan the Destroyer, so the least destructible options, the better.
One of these filled with hay:

Uncle Jimmy’s Hanging Balls, I think they are called? My Evil Burrito loved those when he was on stall rest after he broke his leg. The Lik-Its are nice too but spendy. Make sure your horse doesn’t have any metabolic issues, both of these are high(er) in sugar.
I like the Uncle Jimmy’s Treat Balls too. I find horses are interested in them even if they ignore all other stall toys.
They make one shaped to go on a Lik It holder. I think it makes them last a bit longer.
This is $72
You can get a similar looking dog toy in the largest to do the same thing for $20 or less.
Do you have a link to one? I was on Chewy and couldn’t find anything. Thanks!
Different but work very well for the same purpose and affordable.
Those are a lot smaller and are made of rubber, I don’t see that being safe for horses. A lot of reviewers complained that their dogs tore it up in a matter of minutes, I imagine a horse could do the same and possibly swallow pieces of rubber or get it wrapped around a leg.
The one I posted is big and holds many pounds (I put 6# in mine) of hay. I’ve had one for years and my horse is a very aggressive eater but hasn’t damaged it. I leave it on the ground so it gets pushed and kicked around.
Sure
The dog one is great for what the OP is asking- something for the horse to play with. Lots of horses in our barn have these and there haven’t been any issues. They are not for feeding 6 lbs of hay they are an option for a toy that can hold hay and other treats.
My dog can chew through a hay net but I still use them for horses.
I won a hanging Himalayan salt lick. My horse would not touch it, so we tried it in the stallion’s stall. He LOVED that thing. Lasts a little longer than treats as well.
I’ve got to ask…does anyone know what the big fuss is over Himalayan salt licks? Are they truly from the Himalayas, and if so, are they over-harvesting the salt? I also think many are actually manufactured. I don’t think they’re harmful. I just worry about the source.
Excellent! But what is an”Swede?” A turnip?
It’s a rutabaga. Good eating!
A jerry-rigged stall toy I did was strung a chain between two walls of a stall in a corner. Then I hung a milk jug with a whole cut in the sides towards (more or less and small or large depending on difficulty) so my horse couldn’t pin it against the wall and filled it with alfalfa pellets. At first it would take him 2-3 hours to empty it. Than he got good at it and could get it empty in under 20 min.
A different version was the Lic-It treat ball. I can fill it with alfalfa pellets and it takes him quite a while to get through it. He can stomp on it, chew on it, fling it in the air if he can get a grip and it has yet to be destroyed. However he did figure out how to open up the plug in the back immediately after I gave it to him. I recommend duct taping those closed.
Freeze treats in a Bundt pan, remove from the Bundt pan and hang in the stall with twine or put in a feed pan. I’ve been using Gatorade and baby carrots on super hot days.
