Hopefully everyone’s horses are up to date on their vaccinations.
I saw this in my local paper. I never knew it could infect humans. Very concerning.
Rebecca
I didn’t know it affected humans either.
Yes humans are a dead end host. I understand that the WEE virus has become less infectious over time. I seem to remember something from the 60s, late, about mass slaughter of horses in Texas due to Encephalitis, I think. A quick good and I found recent reports of positive horse cases EEEv
We had a horse put down this past month with EEE in our county (NJ)…the horse was new to the owners and they had just gotten the horse vaccinated a week before it got EEE according to the local news. We’ve also had a human case of EEE very recently in the same county.
We do have lots of mosquitos here…I am more nervous for myself (being immune compromised) since my horses are all vaccinated for it routinely…I didn’t realize humans could contract it either.
Please do take precautions for yourself.
My horses have always had VEE, EEE, and WEE vax since I first had horses in the early 70s.
I am in Plymouth County but outside the areas they have been spraying. Thankfully I don’t have a mosquito problem on the farm. It’s been a pretty dry August so will help kill off the population in the areas of concern.
I am surprised some of you did not know that humans were affected? We have been dealing with this for well over 30 years around here! A friend of my moms grandson had EEE when he was a kid, it’s unusual but he did survive and has neurological problems.
I had never heard of it affecting humans. I suppose haven’t lived in an area where people were affected, so before the proliferation of news on the internet it was probably not part of the national news.
wow! I assumed it was a problem everywhere that had mosquitoes! I need to do a little research and see what its up with that! So far one horse died in Plymouth County and it was confirmed he was not vaccinated. I do my spring shots for EEE and West Nile in the late spring so we don’t have to booster them again in the fall if the mosquitoes are still active.
I think they must worry more about West Nile here (in people).
Horses were vaccinated for VEE, EEE, and WEE wherever I’ve lived.
we have to give a booster for West Nile in the fall, we were doing just a spring time West Nile every years since the vaccine became available. In 2017 we lost a horse in the Fall to West Nile, this horse had been annually vaccinated sine the 2002.
Since then we revaccinate in the Fall
Your season goes later than ours so I get it!
Are they only seeing this uptick in people or are y’all having extra issues in horses too?
This article mentions (along with another human fatality) animals that have been affected, but who knows if the Times has all of the stats. 2 Emus dead.
