EHV-1 in Virginia

Surprised yet appreciative to see this article posted by COTH, since they don’t cover Saddlebred news .
It definitely helps to get the word out though. I hope this outbreak can be contained asap. So sad for the owner who lost their horse. :frowning:

Both horses with symptoms were immediately transferred to Rood and Riddle. Same owner for both which is devastating.

My understanding is that the horses in the barn are being held in quarantine for 20 something days and had to withdraw from the show.

How terrible for the owner to have two infected, one lost! Jingles for the other horse. Hope they contain the outbreak.

Apparently 80 horses in quarantine. Jingles for all involved - a frightening situation.

Alas, per the State Vet about 10 minutes ago, the second horse passed :frowning:

I saw this news over the weekend, and I’ll admit it rattled me slightly. I always pay attention to news of EHV-1 ourbreaks, but they’re not usually anywhere that would really affect me. But now I’m supposed to show at the VHC in mid-July.

How does an outbreak like this affect a facility? Are there precautions to take when we get there?

If you go to the main post by the state the facility manager commented steps they are doing to clean the facilities. It sounded like the state vet has a company they use.

I lost my second horse to EHV/EHM.
It was horrific.
I wish people would be more careful about quarantine as a general rule
