EHV at Thermal?

It’s Spruce Meadows, they enforce EVERYTHING! When you show at Spruce , you do things their way or you are shown the door….they aren’t number one for nothing! It doesn’t matter what type of show they are putting on, they are absolute sticklers for rules

There are instances where bringing exposed/sick horses “home” makes sense.

I currently have my 2 retirees at home in my farmette. If one of my show horses was exposed/sick and was at a show venue, especially one far from my home vet and where it would be hard for me to closely supervise the horse, I’d pack the two retirees off and have them go to the boarding barn where my show horses usually live and I’d bring the exposed/sick horses home where I could personally care for them and where they’d be close to New Bolton etc. They would be able to be completely isolated from any other horses here and receive much better care and attention. I’d trailer them myself, disinfect the trailer, and not use it for any other horses until it was clear we were totally out of the woods.

This is, of course, radically different than hauling exposed/sick horses off to another show. Which, even in the world of point chasing and insane owner/trainer behavior of all sorts still TOTALLY BLOWS MY MIND.

But I can see situations where quarantining in place at a show ground, especially with a symptomatic horse, is not the ideal situation.

@Horsegirl_s_Mom - “outing the trainer” would be fun, but it will do nothing. Everyone in NorCal knows who it is and that’s what counts. Hopefully they will complain to the USEF about her actions or lack thereof. Not only did she put every other competitors horses life at risk, her chaos has created the cancellation of shows, and the cancellation of income for hundreds of people involved in putting the shows on. Ingate Personnel, jumpcrew, Grooms, braiders, trainers, and vendors. Some people are staying at the venue to isolate there for 21 days, and her chaos has created the situation which increases the expenses of the owners. I know owners who have deposits for Airbnb units next week and cannot get their deposits back. Kids cannot show their horses. People who’ve worked hard over the winter to try to get back to showing in the springtime, or early winter as it is, no longer can show. Not to mention all 200 horses at the venue all could be exposed and or become symptomatic. All because of this one trainer’s selfishness, to go to a horse show directly from the contaminated Thermal site. It’s disgusting.
@GallopGirl- not all of the horses were tested. Only two horses were tested that I know of. I believe those were the two known to have come in from Thermal week 4. I do not know the results of the second horse’s test.

It would give those of us not in Northern California the name of a trainer that we wouldn’t want to ever do business with.

There are names up post. Around post 88 and 91.

Thanks. Wasn’t sure if it was a new trainer not mentioned.

I am not sure if there are others.

It is a new trainer that hasn’t been mentioned above. It’s someone based in NorCal who went down to Thermal, then came back up and went to MEC.

HorseShowDiva has the names of trainers who went from Thermal directly to Murieta. Recognizing that this is still rumor, I’m leery of posting the new name here.

HSD also has a post stating USEF is planning to shut down all shows in California for a period of weeks.

HSD is like the Daily Mail of horse news… but both sources turn out to be correct surprisingly often.

Truth👆

It’s not hard to figure out. Look at SGL and the WP site and see which horses went to Thermal week 4 then LAEC.

And I a heard several people mentioned the fact that she had been to Thermal week 4 and show mgmt just shrugged so that doesn’t look very good. She justified it by saying there is no way the mare could have been exposed and she was being super careful. Which I’m sure is all true but this just reinforces how contagious this virus can be.

Thank you, Angela Freda. I witnessed EHV-1up close and personal when it hit a large boarding and competition farm I was boarding at over 20 years ago. I can’t un-see or un-hear what I witnessed. We lost 4 over the course of a month. Each one ended up with hind end paralysis (but front end still worked). It was like living a nightmare every day. My horse got it and started to show mild neurological effects, but luckily didn’t turn neurological. The smell of DMSO still practically gives me PTSD. Over 20 years later, it’s still a horrible, heartbreaking traumatic scene. Anyone who takes it lightly CANNOT fathom what they are dealing with.

That may well be. My question is how they can trace what facility every horse has been in before they arrive at Spruce, and what other horses may have been at the same facility at the same time. Not just the ones who may have come straight from another horse show.

Entries to both DIHS Week 4 and Northern Winter Classic are public information. It is possible to cross check entry lists on the shows’ respective pages.

But to clarify, there is no information that her mare was the one that (supposedly) tested positive at Murieta, right?

Boy… obviously one wouldn’t take chances with any horse, but that is one valuable mare. Crazy to do anything that might put her at risk. Though I guess really, it’s the other horses in the barn that were put at risk since they apparently all met up with her at Murieta (but didn’t go to Thermal).

When you show at Spruce you have to state your barn…. We are in Alberta, there’s not that many barns that travel to Thermal and everyone knows who’s down there! Also they are currently asking people who’ve entered if their barn has had horses there…. People here WILL turn people in! Plus, in Canada all shows we show in (including those in the USA) are recorded on our horse passport which are checked by horse shows when we enter (it’s all electronic on equine Canada)…. We cannot enter shows without a horse passport number

I heard from people there that it was the mare (the only horse she had at Thermal) but I think it’s weird that NWC didn’t put out an email. I do know there was a mass exodus so maybe it’s true. Time will tell.

Someone up thread asked about other shows in SoCal. Galway cancelled their h/j show next weekend. There was also a dressage show scheduled in two weeks (March 11-13) at Galway. They just pushed it back a week and require all horses to have a health certificate (attesting to a number of relevant things) from a vet within 72 hours of arrival. I think at least one event in central CA is also requiring these health certificates. I’m sure more restrictions at more CA events, dressage shows, and h/j shows will appear in the coming days as this problem continues to spread.

Indoor Spruce Meadows shows are a lot smaller than the summer series. Definitely way easier to keep an eye on this things. This will be the first indoor Spruce since covid, people are keen to show and will definitely be aware of which horses have been exposed to horses returning from the south.

I would think most of these horses will have to do a quarantine in the states, especially if they want down at the beginning of circuit. They will likely need USDA health certificates to return to Canada and if they are similar to Canadian Health Certs a vet will have to sign off saying the horse has not been on a facility with a communicable disease for at least 14 days.
