EHV at Thermal?

Agreed. The first time I heard of an outbreak of EHV1 and how contagious it is, I immediately googled and learned what I could. The outbreak wasn’t even in my state, but since I didn’t know much about it, I wanted to learn.

Strangles came to my barn. I instructed staff to not handle my horse or his only stalled pasture mate (luckily, in neighboring stalls), called my vet and googled for more information. The only two stalled horses that did not get it were my horse and his pasture mate. I cleaned their stalls, watered them and did turnout and bring in.

We unfortunately lost a precious little donkey. All infected horses survived although a couple were really sick for a month.

I’m honestly not trying to be judgmental. I would just encourage horse owners to never stop seeking education on good horse management. Trainer or no trainer, final decision authority belongs to us. We need to be our horse’s/horses’ best advocate.

Thank you for eloquently stating what I tried to say! If we are to be owners – even amateur owners – then I also believe we are taking on the responsibility of being our horse’s advocate. Absolving oneself of all responsibility/decisions and putting it all on the trainer is, in my opinion, not good horsemanship. I totally agree that we need to constantly seek education in order to do our best for our animals.

And by the way, @Demerara_Stables, I love that you are a trainer who wants this for your clients, too.

February 28 update from Desert International Horse Park (DIHP) at Thermal.

Dear Desert Circuit competitors,

Over the last three days we have accumulated 24 samples which were sent to the CDFA lab this morning for testing today.

Six of these samples were for horses that had previously tested positive for EHV-1. Two of these horses have now recorded their first negative tests and will start their seven-day sequence for a second negative test.

Six of these samples were for horses that had previously tested negative for EHV-1. Two of these horses have now tested positive and have been moved to isolation.

Twelve of these samples were for horses that exhibited an elevated temperature over the last three days and were tested for the first time. None of these 12 horses tested positive. They will be retested in several days to ensure they remain negative.

Two groups were released from quarantine as of this evening. These groups have been in quarantine for 14 days and none of their horses had exhibited any clinical symptoms during this time period.

Only one new horse had an elevated temperature reported today. This horse was swabbed and will be the only test result available tomorrow.

We will have an update meeting at 11 am tomorrow in VIP.

Steve

Horses usually run a fever when actively infected and then shed the virus for 7 to 10 days after the incubation period. The dates above suggest that in addition to leaving Thermal and going to RM in four days, she was not bothering to take the horse’s temperature twice as day.
Psychologically, I can see the stress— you’ve told yourself your horse is not infected to justify irresponsible decision #1, so you don’t want to face the fact that your horse could be infected, and therefore make bad decision #2 to not even monitor temperature.
If she had been taking the horse’s temperature, the horse could have been removed more promptly.

Just unforgivable all around.

She claimed in a FB a post that she was taking the mare’s temp twice a day - one way she rationalized her actions.

It’s conceivable that she was taking the horse’s temp twice a day and the horse was infected without having a fever, but I don’t believe her. Irresponsible, selfish behavior and lying tend to go together.

If there is such a thing as a professional Facebook page crisis manager, this might be a good time to hire one.

Thank you! Education in horse management, not just riding, is SO important.

Said person would probably want to consider removing things like the photo of said mare about three feet from a client’s horse standing with their ribbons after the derby at MEC that was for sure less than seven days after she left Thermal, but…

There are some fabulous horses in that barn. Can’t imagine being one of the owners.

Let’s just hope by some miracle that this thing didn’t spread to any other horses at Murieta, including our mare’s son. Perhaps it’s a good thing that as a very green 5 year old still trying to master 2 foot courses, our little guy won’t likely have been in classes with the glamorous crowd from that barn.

I wonder how many of these folks who are thinking they are doing it right… have their dogs walking around and tracking dirty paws etc around

FEI just published pt 1 of their report on the EHV-1 problem last year in Europe–details on recommended biosecurity included.

@Horsegirl_s_Mom
They are well marketed on social media. I would hardly call them glamorous in real life.
I hope your mare’s son is ok, and there is no spread anywhere.

As a competitor at NWC week 1, I can’t believe I’m learning about the positive case there from social media and vaguely from USEF. Not a peep from show management to say “Hey, your horse was here when there was also a EHV infected horse here.” Please don’t make me get critical information about my horse’s exposure from the rumor mill.

THIS👆! Still shocked that Tim has not put out an email about the situation. Maybe worried about lawsuits?

Yes! The last thing I saw (which I posted here) was a bulletin they put out saying there were “No” infected horses on the grounds. The next day, people on this forum starting talking about a case, and I was skeptical since we had received such a clear statement saying there were no cases. I was sure that if there were a case, a follow-up would be sent out. It never was.

I will say that all the trainers packed up and left in a flash Saturday morning. Maybe there was a trainer meeting disclosing the case??

There was. The positive case was disclosed by the show vet at the meeting, Dr. Runk. The positive horse (Lulavani – not disclosed at the meeting but it’s common knowledge who it was) left the facility Friday.

(Can’t get the quote function to work!)

There are now two confirmed cases at Middleranch of horses who came from Thermal. Why isn’t anyone talking about it? Blenheim will accept horses from Middleranch and Hansen Dam without proof of negative tests?
